The Department of Chemistry of Thiagarajar College organised a lecture on ‘Photoelectron Spectroscopy and its applications’ as part of its golden jubilee celebrations recently. C. S. Gopinath, Scientist, Catalysis Division, NCL, Pune, who delivered the lecture, highlighted the principles of Photoelectron Spectroscopy and its applications in various fields such as nanotechnology, study of surface phenomenon, surface reactions, elemental analysis, studies on semi
conductors and solid samples.
He also discussed the importance of CSIR-UGC JRF NET examination to the students and facilities available for research. About 250 students took part in the workshop.
The department also organised an intercollegiate students’ seminar on ‘Molecular informatics and drug design’ and ‘nanochemistry in medicine’ As many as 67 students from 21 colleges participated and presented papers. A. Thamaraichelvan, Head, Department of Chemistry, welcomed the gathering. C.R. Ramanthan highlighted the role of synthetic organic chemistry and medical chemistry in drug development.
