Honoured: Anuradha receiving the best paper presentation award at the seminar conducted by the Department of Physics, National College, in Tiruchi.

The Department of Physics of National College organised a seminar on ‘crystal growth of non-linear optical materials’.

R. Dhanasekaran, professor, Anna University, Chennai, in his inaugural address, exhorted the students to pursue research after postgraduation. Principal K. Anbarasu and HoD S. Pari were among those who spoke.

K. Ramamoorthy, professor, School of Physics, Bharathidasan University, in his valedictory address, appreciated the efforts taken by the college in organising the seminar on an emerging topic.

The importance of non-linear crystal growth has been gaining roots all over the world, he said. Dr. Ramamoorthy gave away prizes for the best papers presented.

The Busy Bee Club of the Department of Commerce of Cauvery College for Women organised a seminar on the topic ‘Indian economic perspectives’.

The Fellow Member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, R. G. Rajan, was the resource person. He spoke on the reasons for the downslide of dollars, the flow of funds and FDI, the scope for a bright future of developing countries like India.

Principal V. Sujatha presided over the meeting. The secretary of the College Governing Council, K. Rengarajan, member of the Reddy Educational Trust, S. Gopal and others offered felicitations.

The Chief Engineer, North Chennai Thermal Power Station, S. Rajendran, was the chief guest at the at the Alumni Day celebrations of the Seshasayee Institute of Technology (SIT).

The alumni shared their ideas in strengthening the association as well as in promoting the institution and its infrastructure.

The secretary of the SIT, T. R. Sivaraman, the principal, S. Sangappillai, and the Head of the Department of Mechanical, N. Raju, offered felicitations.

The secretary of the Alumni Association, Kothandaraman, presented the report on the activities undertaken last year.

The activities of the Women’s Association of M. A. M. College of Engineering were inaugurated during the International Women’s Day celebrations.

The news reader of the All India Radio, J. Christy Subathra, delivered the inaugural address. The principal, M. A. Maluk Mohamed, presided over the function.

The secretary of the college, M. A. Mohamed Nizam, the director, V. Shanmuganathan, and the convener of the Women’s Association, R. Chandra, offered felicitations.

The vice-chairperson, M. A. Sabarunnia, was honoured as the best role-model for the women of MAM Group of Institutions.

Under the auspices the Department of Biotechnology of Bishop Heber College, a two-day workshop on ‘methods in Bioinformatics’ was held recently.

The HoD, Ramya, explained the objective of the workshop. The HoD of Bioinformatics, Bharathidasan University, S. Parthasarathi, addressed a technical session on the theme.

Students participated in the question-answer session and got their doubts cleared.

The principal, Marcus Diepen Boominathan, released a souvenir brought out in connection with the workshop.

Women students pursuing various courses in Urumu Dhanalakshmi College participated in a rally organised in connection with the International Women’s Day.

Rev. Sr. Anees Mathew of the Lakshmanadas Hospital flagged off the rally. Buvaneswari, senior teacher of the college, was the chief guest.

The principal in-charge of the college, K. Sekar, in his address hoped that 33 per cent reservation for women would become a reality in the country in the near future.

The Department of Computer Science of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College organised a UGC-sponsored seminar ‘Cyber Feast-2008’.

The Professor and Head, IT and Computer Science and Engineering, Anna University, Tiruchi, R. Krishnamoorthy, in his inaugural address, urged the students to bridge the digital divide in the world.

He explained the impact of information revolution on lifestyle, employment, personal computing, application areas like healthcare, telemedicine, education, e-governance, new products in today’s technological development, etc.



Viewpoints: A seminar on ‘Indian economic perspectives’ in progress at Cauvery College for Women.

The principal in-charge, G. Kalyani, presided over the inaugural. The head of the Department of Computer Science, K. S. Rathnamala, offered felicitations. R. Sivakumar, Director (technical), National Informatics Centre; A. Vadivel, Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Applications, NIT-T, and A. Saranya, Quality Analyst, Infosys Technologies and alumnus of the college, delivered lectures at the sessions.

The Department of Chemistry of Jamal Mohamed College celebrated Science Day with the objective of updating the knowledge of young graduates in the field of Chemistry. The Dean of Science and Reader in Chemistry, Holy Cross College, delivered a special lecture on ‘electronegativity and its applications’.

She explained the achievements of scientists such as Einstein and Newton who contributed to the development of the basic sciences and mankind.

The Head of the Department of Chemistry, K. Sithick Ali, presided, and the Reader in Chemistry, A. Abdul Jameel, offered felicitations.

The Hospitality Educators and Recruiters Association (HERA), Chennai, and the Jenney Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management jointly organised a seminar on ‘How to become a successful hotelier?’.

The seminar was attended by over 220 budding hoteliers from various catering colleges. S. Ram Mohan, Group HR Manager, The Residency Group, Chennai, and HERA president; V. Kothandaraman, Training Manager, GRT Raddison Hotel, Chennai, and Amjad Hussain, Training Manager, The Rain Tree Hotel, Chennai, were the resource persons.

S. P. Anthony Samy, managing director, Hotel Parisutham, Thanjavur, inaugurated the programme in the presence of the managing director, Jenneys Academy, Joseph Francis. The Director (technical), Jenneys Academy, M. Ponnilango presided.
