All set to sail: Marine engineering graduates fling their caps in the air during their passing-out and graduation day ceremony at the Marine Engineering and Research Institute in Kolkata.
The Merchant Navy plays a vital role in global trade, being involved in the plying of vessels carrying cargo or passengers all over the world. The excellent pay and promotional opportunities make the career attractive for many.
Career options are mainly related to the posts of marine engineer and navigation officer. There are two major options to become a deck or navigation officer. The first way is to study the three-year B.Sc. Nautical Science or Maritime Science course approved by the Director-General of Shipping (DGS).
To become a marine engineer, one should enrol for the four-year professional marine engineering degree course approved by the DGS.
Meritorious students who have passed Plus Two with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English are eligible to study these courses. Proficiency in English language and communication skills are an added advantage.
Direct entry to the Merchant Navy is also possible. Students who have completed their Plus Two with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are eligible to join as deck cadets.
Meritorious graduates in mechanical or electrical engineering can join as engine cadets after undergoing a basic pre-sea training.
Study facilities
The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata, offers a four-year professional degree course in marine engineering. As many as 160 seats are available here.
The Training Ship (TS) Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, offers a three-year B.Sc. nautical science course. As many as 120 seats are available. MERI, Mumbai, offers a three-year B.Sc. (maritime science) course. Intake is 30. Selection to all the three courses is based on the rank in the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), physical and medical fitness tests and performance during counselling and interview.
A pass in Plus Two or equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics with a minimum 60 per cent marks (55 per cent for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and physically challenged candidates) in aggregate is required to appear for the JEE.
T.S. Chanakya prepares cadets to become navigating officers and MERI marine engineers and polyvalent officers.
