The thematic structure of courses at TAPMI is a big draw

Solid base: A study session in progress at T.A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal.
The T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) at Manipal has carved a niche for itself in providing ethics-based management education since 1984. Its flagship two-year Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Management (PGDM), which is equivalent to the MBA, is immensely popular among the students aspiring to be managers in India and abroad.
The minimum qualification for applying for this PGDM course is graduation. In addition to this, students have to pass an entrance test, group discussion, and two panel interviews.
Experience counts
They are also tested for their writing skills and extempore lecture. Some weight is given to students who come with experience in the industry. The intake of students is limited to 180.
What makes the PGDM different from the existing courses is that it operates on 10 themes connected to management. They are: Personal Competence, Individuals and Roles, Firms and Markets, Management in Practice, Firms and their function, Firm’s Performance, Managerial Leadership, Firm’s Context, Professional Competence, and The Complete Manager. Says Director of TAPMI, D. Nagabrahmam, “Students have to clear these themes. In addition, students are involved in case writing. 200 case studies done by us are registered with the European Case Clearing House (ECCH) at Brussels.”
Students on the computer
An important aspect of the PGDM is the Management in Practice programme, where the students are given a week’s exposure during the first year, eight weeks of summer internship at the end of the first year and work on an identified organisational issue during the second year.
In addition students would be working with a NGO to gain experience of social orientation. The students are also encouraged to join the faculty members to pursue research in areas of common interest.
Good infrastructure
The institute provides good infrastructure for the students including its library, which has 30,000 books, 325 periodicals and 4,500 bound volumes of journals. It also has a well-equipped computer lab.
The institute holds events such as BrandScan, a market research fair, every year at Manipal, and Atharva, an annual inter B-school management fest. Both these events are organised by the students. The institute has cent per cent placement record. What do the students feel about TAPMI? Says Sanat Satyan, a second year PGDM student from Delhi, “The main strength is excellent faculty and thematic structure. This helps us to have a thorough knowledge of every topic. Our course helps to be research-oriented, which helps us when we join the industry.”
Rajani Khetan, another student of second year PGDM from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, says “Our course stresses the importance of values and ethics in management. This is why the industry respects our institute. We have an open system, a democratic structure, and can talk openly to our faculty.”
A new hi-tech campus of the TAPMI will be coming up shortly in 42 acres of land at Yembattu Badagabettu village near Manipal.
