What is the difference between ‘perhaps’ and ‘maybe’?
(M. Nirupama, Bangalore)
In terms of meaning, there is no difference between the two; both can be used to mean ‘something is possible’. Of the two, ‘maybe’ is considered to be informal. It is frequently heard in speech, but is seldom used in formal styles of writing. ‘Maybe’ always comes at the beginning of a clause; ‘perhaps’, on the other hand, can come in different positions.
Maybe you should tell them that you don’t really like the job.
Perhaps you should tell them that you don’t really like the job.
You should perhaps tell them that you don’t really like the job.
Make sure to maintain the distinction between ‘maybe’ and ‘may be’.
