Microwave engineering made easy



Easy access: Students of National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi accessing their microwave lessons online.

Microwave engineering, known to be the toughest paper in Electronics and Communication Engineering with complicated mathematical concepts and electrical circuits, is made easy by students of National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T).

To make the lessons accessible for their contemporaries across the globe, the students have floated their presentations on the Internet. The e-class for microwave engineering, mooted by S. Raghavan, professor of the department, has been gaining momentum in the recent past.

The dreary derivations in the fat books have been cut down to simpler terms by the NIT-T students of 2008 and ’09 batches. After meticulous preparation of their lessons, the students tweak the syllabi to suit their interest. Lessons were initially compiled through Power Point presentations by the ’07 batch students. Their juniors, who are currently doing their III-year ECE, have taken a lead by programming through HTML, cascaded style sheet, visual basic, java script and Flash to wed convenience and speed.

A recent presentation on their projects revealed the semester-long hard work. “Most of the textbook technologies have become obsolete. We repackage those lessons with updates in a way we understand it. That gives other students who access it much clearer view about the subject,” Sundaram, class representative, said.

A few students have come up with self-explanatory presentations with their recorded voices. Though loaded with high-resolution pictures, circuit diagrams and interesting animations through Flash, presentations are compressed considerably for a quick go-through. The course formats contains online calculators to compute design values and a few students have added online tutors that help learners draw the layout on computer.

“These online layouts can work as perfect components when fabricated as a hardware,” Mr. Raghavan said. Students can rack up online lessons on components of microwave, circuit design, phase shifters, wave coupler and co-planar wavelength along with a basic introduction to microwave. “The best thing about making online material for our syllabus is that we do not risk forgetting programming skills we gained in the first year,” Bhavadharini, a student, said.
