NIT-C offers a bouquet of new courses

Most of these courses are in emerging areas. Those in biotechnology, nanotechnology and signal processing have much scope in academics and research.

Seven new courses will be started at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), in the academic year beginning this July. The courses are B.Tech. in biotechnology; M.Tech. in nanotechnology, signal processing and telecommunications; M.Sc. tech programmes in photonics and polymer science and technology; and a postgraduate diploma in civil engineering (construction management).
The institute has plans to start a two-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) course in the academic year starting July 2009. Only engineering graduates will be admitted to this course, which will have 30 seats. The Common Admission Test (CAT) score will be the basis for admission.
K.P. Mohandas, Dean (Postgraduate Studies and Research), says the new courses are in areas in which the institute is strong. Most of them are in emerging subjects.
Biotechnology
The qualification required for admission to the four-year programme is pass in Plus Two with physics, chemistry and mathematics. The candidates will have to appear for the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). There will be 30 seats, of which 15 will be reserved for students who have studied their Plus Two in Kerala and have qualified in the AIEEE.
M.Tech. programmes
Each M.Tech. and M.Sc. tech programme will have 18 seats, of which five will be reserved for sponsored candidates. Ten seats are for general merit candidates, two for Scheduled Caste candidates and one for Scheduled Tribe candidates.
The two-year M.Tech. programme in telecommunication assumes significance in the wake of a revolution in information and communication technologies. The qualification required for admission to the course is B.Tech. in electronics and communication with a Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score in the discipline.
The basic eligibility for admission to the two-year M.Tech. programme is same as that of the telecommunications course. Signal processing deals with the analysis, interpretation and manipulation of signals, whether they be speech, audio, image, video, electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram, those captured by communication receivers or seismic signals.
The M.Tech. programme in nanotechnology is being offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The basic eligibility for admission is a BE or B.Tech. in mechanical, production or chemical engineering and a GATE score in any of these subjects.
Nanotechnology is an emerging interdisciplinary area, which is rated as one of the top-ranked subjects in academics and research. The programme will deal with topics related to the fundamentals and applications of the subject, with a focus on mechanical-engineering-related aspects.
Also on offer are a variety of elective subjects ranging from computational nanotechnology to composite materials, from which students can choose, according to their backgrounds and interests.
Diploma programme
The one-year postgraduate diploma programme in civil engineering (construction management) will admit those having B.Tech. degrees in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering or B.Arch. with a minimum aggregate mark of 60 per cent or a cumulative grade point average of 6.5/10. The selection will be based on a written test in basic civil engineering, group discussion and interview.
The programme comprises two semesters of course work and one of project. Each semester last approximately four months with breaks in accordance with the institute’s rules. The first and second semesters are devoted to classroom learning, acquiring hands-on experience in latest software in construction management and learning research techniques and presentation skills.
The course is proposed to be offered as a self-supporting one on a part-time schedule with the primary target group being working professionals.
The objective of the programme is to train young and dynamic graduate engineers to develop them into mature and knowledgeable professional construction project managers with potential to manage small and large projects in any field in India or abroad.
M.Sc. tech programmes
The basic eligibility for admission to the three-year M.Sc. tech course in photonics is pass in B.Sc. with physics as one of the main subjects with 60 per cent marks, having studied mathematics for at least two years.
Photonics is a futuristic technology of harnessing light for many applications in communications, high-speed data transfer, optical computing, photovoltaic, light energy generation, imaging, holography and almost all application with lasers. It is one of the fast-emerging and most-sought-after technology area with high requirement of skilled personnel.
The courses are structured to provide B.Sc. physics graduates a sound background in postgraduate-level physics and equip them with strong technical components of photonics.
The basic eligibility for admission to the three-year M.Sc. tech (polymer science and technology) course is pass in B.Sc. with chemistry as one of the main subjects with 60 per cent marks. With almost everything from household articles to industrial materials, automobiles to space vehicles and insulators to high conductors going plastic, polymer science and technology is an area with high demand and future prospects.
The admission to the M.Sc. Tech courses will be through an entrance test conducted by the NIT-C.
