‘Women creating their own space in various roles’

Seminar on ‘Privileging Women Agency in History: Work, Worship, Leisure and Pleasure’

Notwithstanding some forms of oppression in the male-dominated society in India now women are becoming more articulate and creating their own spaces in various roles in society and economy. And, they are also bringing out their innovative talents breaking the fortified institutions of patriarchy.

These were among the observations made by scholars at a seminar on ‘Privileging Women Agency in History: Work, Worship, Leisure and Pleasure organised by the Department of History, Osmania University here recently.

Collaborative research by historians, sociologists, anthropologists and scholars from other disciplines will be very efficacious in understanding various roles played by women in the history, observed Prof. Vijaya Ramaswamy, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, in her keynote. Both intellectual constraints and external evidence would play a vital role in looking at women groups.

K. Ramakrishna, HoD, Department of History, explained how women’s history is becoming more relevant to the present-day society.

Adapa Satyanarayana said the seminar was intended to discuss the socio-economic history of the Telangana and the Deccan with special emphasis on gender issues, subordinate groups and cultural movements.

36 papers presented

About 36 research papers were presented from across the country.

They include quantitative approach to the study of women by Prof. Vishweshwar Rao, concept of love and pleasure by Prof. I Thirumali, among others.
