PERFECT FIT: It is only natural that Kannur, with a hoary tradition in handlooms and textiles, has found a place in the NIFT's scheme of things. NIFT students are seen at work here during an exhibition.
The ninth centre of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), inaugurated by Union Minister for Textiles Shankersinh Vaghela at Mangattuparamba in Kannur on April 19, will become a full-fledged institution of fashion business education in three years.
An industry-oriented institution, NIFT is all set to give an impetus to the handloom and textile industry in Kannur, which enjoys the status of Town of Export Excellence thanks to textile exports from here.
A premier institute of design, management and technology involved in developing professionals in the fashion business, NIFT is a network of professionally managed centres across the country. It has centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar and Rae Bareli.
The Kannur centre will temporarily function on the campus of the Institute of Handloom and Textile Technology at Thottada, near Kannur, which is also the Kannur University’s Community College for Fashion Designing offering diploma courses.
NIFT Director-General Rajiv Takru announced at the inaugural function that the campus to be developed at Mangattuparamba would have all facilities available in other NIFT centres, such as fully equipped lecture rooms, design studios, laboratories, resource centres, activity centres and hostels.
“We are going to invite expression of interest for developing the campus in Kannur,” says Devadoss, Director of the NIFT Centre in Chennai. Like other centres, the Kannur centre will be a campus with creative architecture and spaciousness, he The Hindu-EducationPlus over phone, adding that in three years, the centre would be a full-fledged campus equipped to provide a common platform for fashion education, research and training. He said that NIFT had provided temporary facilities for starting two batches of the Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech) course in the new academic year.
The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA), nodal agency of the centre, has promised that the construction of the campus will be completed in two years. KINFRA Managing Director S. Ramnath announced this at the inaugural function, which was also attended by Industries Minister Elamaram Karim.
The centre will offer the BFTech (technology) course with apparel production as specialisation and BFTech (fashion and textiles) having textile design as specialisation. While the eligibility for admission to the former is Plus Two with physics, chemistry and mathematics, that of the latter is Plus Two. Both are four-year courses.
BFTech (technology) is a programme designed to train students to excel in the core garment manufacturing technology and, says NIFT authorities, it suits the demands of the local textile industry for technically competent professionals in the field.
The programme equips students in areas of design and management with main emphasis on technology and prepares them with best practices in apparel manufacturing, coupled with an understanding and application of information technology, they say. The programme emphasises practical and hands-on experience through state-of-the-art technology.
The other programme focusses on development of creativity, originality and design application in apparel and home fashion industries. This also caters to local demands, as Kannur is known for its exports of home-furnishing items.
The multidisciplinary curriculum is equipped to deliver skill-oriented education that integrates with information technology and the fashion industry. Mr. Devadoss says that 30 students would be admitted to each course. The students will be selected from a list of candidates who have passed the NIFT Entrance Test 2008 held already.
