Psychotherapy as a career
R. SUJATHA
With more people reporting problems in their marital life, career or even in their school and college years, psychotherapy as a subject has taken firm roots in the country. Psychotherapy and counselling involves doctors, lawyers, teachers and clergymen and includes a range of services, including counselling students during crises in school and college years. Career counselling prepares teens to decide on a path best suit
ed to individual needs. Children below 12 years of age with borderline or pervasive developmental disorders are provided play therapy.
The Institute of Psychotherapy and Management Sciences, Mumbai and the Global Open University of Nagaland have introduced several collaborative programmes in M.Sc., M.A., postgraduate diploma, MBA and M. Phil programmes to address the growing need for professional counsellors across the country.
The courses offer a range of subjects including personality development, psychology, counselling methods, clinical assessment and psychology. Field work involves carrying out what has been learned as theory in classroom. The eligibility for postgraduate programmes is graduation from a recognised university. Contact classes are offered for correspondence and vocational training programmes. Recently the Tamil Nadu Open University launched a course in psychotherapy.
