The Madras Craft Foundation Institute of Arts Management (MCFIAM), run by the Madras Craft Foundation, is offering a one-year programme in Arts Management. Persons with a B.A. or B.Sc. degree are eligible for the course.

The MCFIAM Internship is aimed at offering students an opportunity to learn in-depth about the history, social, economic and political position of the arts in India as well as skills in management, communication, graphics, documentation, video techniques and fieldwork.

Group and individual projects form a key role in hands-on development of skills. It is a course geared to meet the increasing demand and opportunities for persons with a background in the arts, who are also trained in management and communication skills.

The course content draws upon different disciplines such as Cultural Studies, Appreciation of Western and Indian Art, Art Design, Museum Studies, Exhibition Design, Videography, Computer Graphics, Media and Communication and Principles of Management.

Projects

The course includes both group and individual projects. This year, interns, as part of their group project, worked on ‘Hastakala’ and showcased the art forms of Kalamkari, Cheriyal paintings, Tanjore paintings, and Shadow Puppetry of South India .

The students were also involved this year in a four-week ‘International Workshop on Fieldwork and Archival Training’ with Wurzburg University, Germany; the Regional Resource Centre, Udupi; and the National Folklore Centre, Chennai, led by Peter J. Claus, Professor of Cultural Anthropology, University of California (Berkeley).

The course is into its third year and students have secured placements in a wide range of art/culture-related jobs including cultural tourism, performing and visual arts organisations, cultural centres, museums, art galleries and the hospitality industry.

A total of 15 candidates will be selected every year based on merit.

Scholarships

As many as 10 of these students will receive a tuition waiver and Rs. 3,000 stipend for the year from the JRD Tata Trust, which supports the course.

The tuition fee for each of the other five students is Rs. 50,000.

Successful completion of an individual project is mandatory for completion of the course. Interns are given 6-8 weeks to prepare a proposal, execute it and present it before an independent jury.
