PLANNING HELPS: Staying cool and composed holds the key.
Excellence is an essential requisite for any Public service and its pursuit begins with the recruitment process. The ‘Civil Services Examination’ is designed not only to attract top quality products of the Universities but also to ensure that the best among them are chosen.
The examination is designed on a sequential pattern based on the twin principles that “the average quality would get richer as the stream proceeds from one stage to the next, and sequences would improve the efficiency of the selection and make it more homogeneous”. The Preliminary examination for this year is scheduled to be held on 18th of May, 2008.
Preliminary
With exactly a week left for the Preliminary, every aspirant feels like the proverbial “Alice in Wonderland” – not knowing what might blow up on his / her face. However, the examination can be tackled by evolving an appropriate strategy and visualizing the situation beforehand.
The General Studies paper is the common compulsory component for all the aspirants. The syllabus, is indeed very wide and questions can be asked from any area. However, if we analyse the previous papers and extrapolate the trends the paper could be tackled with ease and accuracy.
The following trends can be discerned in General Studies :
i) The emphasis on the Indian Polity has been more or less the same.
The same trend is expected to continue. Students who have opted for Public Administration or Political Science as their optionals can allocate less time for this section and use this time for other areas.
ii)General Science which includes Science and Technology, Biology, Chemistry and Physics has been received greater weightage in the year 2007. This year the number of questions could witness a decline. Among the General Science subjects, Biology continues to be in the most important and more questions are expected on the human system and human diseases. The social costs of these diseases could also figure in the questions.
Indian Economy has been receiving less importance in the last few years.
This year there could be more questions with a specific focus on Current Affairs. In Geography the number of questions has been high for the last few years and a minor decrease is expected.
The thrust will be on Indian Geography and it is important to be aware of the maps and the locations of the places in the news.
The number of questions in General Mental Ability is expected to remain the same. However, there could be an increase in the degree of complexity.
Moreover, the questions are being asked from hitherto less expected areas. The questions are increasingly of a complex nature. Questions on probability have shown an increase.
Current Affairs has been the most important area in the recent past. Almost, every question has a current affairs dimension.
Current affairs would include all events that have been taking place for the last one year. However, it is expected that questions would not be asked after the 1st of April, 2008.
The table given, indicates the previous year(s) and the expected distribution of questions.
