On course with marine engineering
Marine Engineering has emerged as one of the most sought-after career opportunities in today’s world. The NRI status that graduates get with opportunities for sailing across seas, rich pay packets, frequent promotions and the break given every six months really gets youngsters hooked to this lucrative job.
The Chennai School of Ship Management (CSSM) started off as a Marine Engineering Training Institute in 1998 with an objective to impart Marine Engineering Training under the Alternate Training Scheme (ATS).
CSSM conducts this course with the approval of the Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways. The duration of the course is 32 months with a valuable training on-board a ship for 9 months within the training period.
CSSM commenced the maiden batch of ATS in February 1999. The college campus is situated at Mambakkam on Vandaloor - Kelambakkam Road, with state-of-the-art infrastructure as per the requirements of DGS.
Candidates with a Plus-Two pass with 60 per cent aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics and 60 per cent in English, age not exceeding 20 years and eye sight within +2.5 without colour blindness can apply.
On completion of ATS, the cadets have to appear for M.O.T Class IV Part A examination conducted by D.G Shipping. The examination consists of four papers, namely, Marine Engineering Drawing, Marine Heat Engines, Applied Mechanics and Mathematics. After passing this examination, they enter as 5th engineer.
On completion of the course, the cadets are assured placement with reputed firms.
