There are plenty of openings not only in the civil aviation sector but also in IAF, HAL, ISRO and NAL

HOT AREA: According to aviation industry estimates there will be a requirement of at least 20,000 qualified engineers in the next five years.
There is a projected demand of 1,000 new civilian aircraft in the next ten years, both for long and short haul flights. It’s time the Indian aeronautics industry wakes up and captures the national market – ISRO Chairman, G Madhavan Nair.
There could not be a better indicator of the career prospects for students choosing to study aeronautical engineering, than the assertion of the ISRO chief. Mr. Nair was not exaggerating the exponential growth in the civil aviation sector in India.
Requirement
Aviation industry estimates are that the number of aircraft owned by the airline companies in India would touch the 300 mark by 2013. That would necessitate employment of at least 20,000 qualified engineers and the present scene in the industry is that they have only roughly ten per cent of the industry-ready engineers.
This interesting piece of information would bring into sharp focus the future growth of the aeronautical industry and thereby indicates the career prospects for those opting for aeronautical engineering courses in Andhra Pradesh.
It is not just the civil aviation sector that has openings for a BE / B.Tech in aeronautical engineering.
There is a wide variety of openings for the young graduates. The employment potential is originating from software companies in aerospace domain, to defence research organisations.
Jobs are on the offer in Indian Air Force (IAF), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and National Aeronautics Laboratory (NAL) or simply in the airline industry where qualified engineers are absorbed as technical officers, says G, Manikandan, Dean, Academic Affairs of M.L.R. Institute of Technology in Hyderabad.
Having discussed the career prospects of aeronautical engineering, let’s now get onto the brass tacks.
What is aeronautical engineering?
Aeronautical or aerospace engineering deals with any airborne equipment. It could be an aircraft, a helicopter, a Satellite vehicle, an ornithopter or even a hot air balloon. It deals with design and manufacturing of these vehicles.
What is avionics?
Avionics is a part of aerospace engineering, which is an elective subject in BE/ B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering. It is a specialisation dealing with electronics and electrical related works of airborne equipment. Simply speaking the multitude of controls one sees in a cockpit fall in the sphere of avionics.
Where can I study aeronautical engineering?
Firstly, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Mumbai, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur offer courses and also M.Tech in the subject in addition to Ph.D programmes.
Secondly, in other States, a BE /B.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering is offered in Madras Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, Punjab Institute of Technology, Punjab, Hindustan Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, and Park Engineering college in Coimbatore.
What are the colleges offering the course in A.P. and how many seats are available?
The course is offered only in three colleges in Andhra Pradesh and all the three are in Hyderabad and on its outskirts.
The Institute of Aeronautical Engineering at Dundigal has 90 seats ( www.iare.ac.in), M.L.R. Institute of Technology, Bowenpally has 120 seats ( www.mlrinstitutions.ac.in) and Malla Reddy College of Engineering and Technology, Dulapally has 60 seats ( www.mrcet.com).
How about avionics?
Only Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology ( www.snist.com) in Hyderabad offers this course in collaboration with US-based Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. The courses offered as B.S. Airlines Management, B.S. Airport Management and B.S. Electronics Engineering (Avionics option)
What are the prospects of higher education after BE/B.Tech in aeronautical engineering?
A student can pursue M. Tech in IITs at Mumbai, Madras, Kanpur or Kharagpur. M. Tech programmes are also offered in private institutions also.
Some IITs are offering five-year-integrated Ph.D programmes also. The other option is doing MS courses in United States or United Kingdom.
Where do I get more information about this course?
Check the websites of the colleges concerned in Hyderabad. Or email Mr. G. Manikandan at ‘ manii731@yahoo.co.in’.
