DAAD fellowships for research

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), New Delhi, has announced its annual research fellowships (excluding medicine and sports) for the year 2009-2010 for Indian nationals for research and study at universities and research institutes in the Federal Republic of Germany. The fellowships offered are as follows:
i) Fellowships for Young Researchers and Recent Post Doctoral Scholars. Candidates who have secured a first class in their master’s degree and also those with a bachelor’s degree with at least two years of teaching or research experience are eligible to apply. Candidates may apply within four years of obtaining permanent employment at a recognised Indian university/research institution.
ii) Sandwich Model Fellowship for Ph.D Registered Scholars. This fellowship is open to scholars registered for a doctorate degree in India and with a first class master’s degree. Applicants should have registered for their Ph.D not more than three years prior to the scholarship application deadline.
iii) Fellowships for Doctorate studies in Germany. Candidates with a first class bachelor’s or master’s degree are eligible to apply. Candidates may apply within two years of obtaining their master’s degree.
iv) Fellowships for Ph.D Registered Scholars (2 - 6 months) and M.Phil (German studies). Candidates who have registered for their Ph.D with a university or research institute of university standard can apply. M. Phil candidates of German Studies may also apply. Candidates should have registered for their Ph.D not more than three years / M. Phil in German Studies not more than two years prior to the scholarship application deadline.
Scholarship for PG courses
a. The objective of the DAAD scholarship for postgraduate courses for professionals from developing countries is to provide academically trained professionals working in leading positions the opportunity of doing a PG course in their area of specialisation.
Professionals holding an above average academic degree (a 4-year bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree) with at least two years of experience, relevant to the selected PG course, and currently engaged in public administration or in the public or private enterprise sector are eligible to apply.
Age limit for most of the courses is 36 years (should be verified from details on individual courses). Language of instruction is both German and English for some courses.
DAAD scholarships are being offered in the areas of Economic Sciences, Business Administration, Political Economics, Development Co-operation, Engineering and related sciences, Mathematics, Regional Planning, Environmental Sciences, Agricultural and Forest Sciences, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine, Education and Sociology.

Online application
In order to accelerate the selection procedure for DAAD scholarships, online application has been introduced for some scholarship programmes of the DAAD.
The applications should be filled online, printed and together with the necessary documents mailed to the DAAD office in New Delhi. This will not only speed up the application procedure but also simplify the application format for the applicants. Scholarship programmes that require online application need to be filled online first and then duly-signed applications with documents should be sent to DAAD Delhi office.
Direct applications will not be accepted. Deadlines for applying to most of these fellowships is October 1, 2008.
