Celebration: National Public Relations Education Day Celebrated at Stella Maris College recently.

The ‘National Public Relations Education Day’ was recently celebrated at Stella Maris College to commemorate the 75th birthday of C.V. Narasimha Reddi, a stalwart in Public Relations (PR) who has worked in the area for the past several decades.

He had held the position of Director, Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of Andhra Pradesh, and also worked as Press Secretary to four Chief Ministers. He had also been national president of PRSI.

Organised by the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), Chennai Chapter, along with the Department of Public Relations, Stella Maris College, the programme had leading practitioners highlight the latest trends in the field of PR.

Daniel Dass, chairperson, PRSI, Chennai Chapter, said the Society was formed primarily to groom aspiring PR professionals. He introduced the new team of office-bearers: G. Krishnan, vice-chairman, Suganthy Sundarraj, secretary, and V. Kalidoss, treasurer, and launched the activities for the year.

V.S. Ramana, former chairperson, PRSI, Chennai Chapter, said the average age of the members of PRSI Chennai Chapter was dropping with the admission of many young entrants. PRSI offers opportunities for professionals to network and gain experience in organisations.

R. K. Dharan, National vice-president (South), PRSI, explained the significance of the day. He said PRSI was a 50-year-old body and highlighted the importance of PR in education and placed on record the contribution of Dr. Narasimha Reddi.

Dr. Bhavani, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Alabama in Huntsville, spoke on ‘PR in Education’ focusing on the practice of PR in educational institutions particularly in the U.S.

She highlighted the trends in PR, problems that the universities had faced in the past, the difficulties of the present and the possible challenges of the future.

She also spoke on some of the functions of PR in universities such as Image and Relationship management, PR in ‘routine & ‘crisis’ modes, Formal & Informal PR practice and more.

Sundari Krishnamurthy, head, Department of Public Relations, Stella Maris College, and Suganthy Sundaraj, secretary, PRSI, Chennai chapter, were present.
