Geotechnology studies play vital role

R. KRISHNAMOORTHY

Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, is launching a unique ‘six-year integrated M.Tech. course in Geotechnology and Geoinformatics

GEOTECHNOLOGY: A GIS map.

Geotechnology deals with the scientific aspects of the planet Earth and its resources, ecosystems and disasters.

It is essential for sustainable developmental planning and mapping of natural disasters, mitigation and management.

Geotechnology has witnessed phenomenal evolution after the advent of high technologies like Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS ) and Global Positioning System (GPS)-based mobile mapping.

Taking into consideration the various Geo systems-related challenges confronting the Indian subcontinent; the tremendous requirement of manpower to provide solutions and to create disaster-free and sustainable India, and the advanced potential available with the Centre of Excellence in Remote Sensing, the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, is launching a unique ‘six-year integrated M.Tech. course in Geotechnology and Geoinformatics’ from 2008-2009.

Curriculum

The curriculum covers exciting concepts of Geoinformatics technology like aerial and satellite-borne Earth Observation Systems, digital processing and fusion of remote sensing data, 2D and 3D GIS visualisation and animations, GPS-based mobile mapping, geodetic modelling of earth processes, terrestrial photogrammetry; utilisation of these technologies in mapping the surface and deeper parts of the Earth, basin habitats, global tectonics, geomorphology, geo chronology and modern dynamics of the Earth; derivation of discovery concepts for mineral, oil, fuel, water and geo thermal deposits; visualisation of geological ecosystems; concepts of natural disasters mapping, mitigation and management; exploration of extraterrestrial planets and high-tech spatial decision support systems in Geo technology and so on.

There is provision for the exit of the students at the end of the fourth year with B.Tech. degree.

M.Tech. in six years

There is also a novel provision of obtaining the M.Tech. degree in less than six years by taking additional courses and credits concurrently.

There is heavy demand for students of Geotechnology. Following IT (information technology) and BT (Biotechnology), now it is GT (Geotechnology) that is going to rule the world, says SM. Ramasamy, Professor and Director, Centre of Excellence in Remote Sensing.

Last date for submitting -in applications is August 25.

Application forms can be downloaded from the web site of the university www.bdu.ac.in or www.remsensbdu.in.
