Gandhian fervour at Andhra University

The Gandhian Studies Centre in Andhra University brought back the Gandhian flavour by organising a series of programmes on the Gandhi Jayanti Day. On the eve of the second International Day of Non-Violence (October 1), the centre conducted a seminar at the TLN Sabha Hall. The Vice-Chancellor of the University Beela Satyanarayana in his inaugural address at the seminar said that Gandhi transcended the bounds of race, religion and nation-states, and had emerged as the prophe tic voice of the 20th century. He urged the students to follow the cardinal principles of Gandhian thoughts: Truth and non- violence.

Former Mayor D.V. Subba Rao in his speech deplored the attempts of the film world in commercialising Gandhiji. The former Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University V. Bala Mohandas, Judicial Member of Income Tax Tribunal Appellate D. Man Mohan and Member of Executive Council of Andhra University I. Murali Krishna Rao, spoke.

A book on ‘Some Reflections on Gandhian thoughts’ edited by the Director of the Gandian Studies Centre A.B.S.V. Ranga Rao and Prof. Sreeranjani Subba Rao was released by the V-C. The Registrar of AU, P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy and Rector of the university Parvathesa Rao and principals of various colleges were present.

On October 2, a prabhat bheri (morning procession) was taken out by the centre in the campus. Students and faculty members joined together to sing ‘raghupathi raghava rajaram’. Later in the day, the centre hosted a prayer meeting and the V-C joined the group to spin the yarn in a charka, to signify the Mahatma’s ideals. After garlanding the Mahatma’s statue near the Registrar’s office, Vice-Chancellor Satyanarayana administered a pledge for non-violence and world peace to the students and faculty members.

AIMS conducts workshop

Ambedkar Institute of Management Studies (AIMS) organised a workshop on challenges of career women here recently. Director (in-charge) of the institute C. Nalini pointed out the significant role played by women in shaping a family and in the society. Former Mayor Rajana Ramani, Padma of Etasi Timpany, D.A. Ramani, former bureaucrat T. Gopal Rao, Head of Foreign Studies of AIMS M. Ram Gopal and programme coordinator D.N. Naveen Kumar also spoke.

Capacity building programme

Durgabai Deshmukh Centre for Women Studies in Andhra University organised a two-day capacity building programme on Tribal Women: Health and health care as a gender issue last week.

The inaugural session was chaired by the Principal of College of Arts and Commerce, AU, L.K. Mohan Rao.

Bhaskar Rao, Assistant Prof. of KGH Krishna Kavitha, Vice-Chancellor of A P Law University Y. Satyanarayana, Dr. G. Prabhakar and Dr. Kootikuppala Surya Rao participated during the two-day seminar.

Refresher course

The National Service Scheme Training and Orientation Centre in Andhra University organised the 52nd refresher course for NSS programme officers from September 25 to 29. The inaugural session was attended by the Assistant Programme Advisor, NSS, Regional Centre, Hyderabad, K. Rajendran.

The former Dean of Student Affairs R. Sudarsana Rao, former NSS Coordinator P.S. Dikshit, Training Coordinator of NSS N.A.D. Pal and S. Haranath participated in the programme.

Ph.D. awarded

D. Venkateswara Rao was awarded Ph.D. in Commerce and Management Studies for his thesis on ‘Human resource training in modern banking system’.

Batulla Mohan Rao has been awarded the Degree of Doctor (Ph.D.) in sociology for his revised thesis on ‘Tribal women and Human Rights- a case study of Visakhapatnam district’.

G. Anita has been awarded the Degree of Doctor (Ph.D.) of philosophy in journalism and mass communication for her thesis entitled ‘Working media women in Andhra Pradesh: A sociological study’. She was under the guidance of Prof. D.V.R. Murthy and has been working as Teacher Associate in the Journalism Department.

Best Principal award

Prof. K.P.R. Chowdary, Principal of Pharmacy College, Andhra University, has been awarded the ‘Best Principal –2008 National Award’ by the Association of Pharmaceutical Teacher of India (APTI), Bangalore. The award was presented to him during the 13th National Annual Convention of the APTI that was held on October 3, at Bilaspur.

Memorandum presented

The president of the Andhra University Economically Backward Class Students Association Muppalla Srinivasa Rao submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Commercial Taxes Konathala Ramakrishna, demanding the immediate release of the GO that orders the enhancement of parental annual income limit from Rs.12,000 to Rs.1 lakh for availing scholarships. A copy of the memorandum was given to the Vice-Chancellor Satyanarayana and Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasad Reddy. The leaders of the association also pressed for the enhancement of the budget allocation from Rs. 30 crores to 250 crores, as the number of beneficiaries have gone up.

Blood donation camp

On the eve of the Gandhi Jayanti, Cygmax Institute of Management Studies organised a blood donation camp. The Indian Red Cross Society conducted the camp. Students, teaching and non-teaching staff participated in large numbers.

Elected

R. Kanna Rao, Reader, Department of Physics, Electronics and Computer Science, Mrs. A.V.N. College has been elected as staff representative for the Governing body of the college.

Charity programme

Andhra University High School Old Students Association (AUHOSA) organised a charity programme on September 22, at the school premises.

The association donated 12 ceiling fans to the Andhra University Primary School. VC Satyanarayana gave the fans away.

Felicitated

The alumni of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College of Law felicitated the founder Vice-Chancellor of A.P. University of Law Y. Satyanarayana. Prof. Satyanarayana was the former Principal of the college.

The Dean, Faculty of Law, R. Venkat Rao, Registrar of AU P.V.G.D. Reddy, former Chairman of Bar Council of India, D.V. Subba Rao, Secretary, Bar Association of Visakhapatnam, U.P.N.R Varma and Principal (in-charge) of the college A. Rajendra Prasad we re present.

The function was organised by Malla Tulasi Ram on behalf of the alumni association.

Training in ocean sciences

The Centre for Studies on Bay of Bengal, Andhra University, has conducted a two-week training programme to impart basic concepts in fundamentals of ocean studies.

As part of the programme the fundamentals of marine geophysics, marine geology, physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, meteorology, marine biology and mathematical and statistical tools for interpretation of data were provided to the students.

At the valedictory function the Rector of AU B. Parvathiswara Rao, Deputy Inspector General of Coast Guard G.P. Raj, Principal College of Science and Technology, AU P. Rajendra Prasad and Director of the Centre K. Gopala Reddy were present.
