University-Industry Council symposium at Puducherry

STAFF REPORTER

Sketching the path ahead for industry-academia collaboration, the third University-Industry Council Symposium would be held at the Pondicherry University on November 21 and 22 on the theme of ‘Future Strategies: Action Now’.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) formed the University-Industry Council in 2007 with the aim of providing a forum where universities can “collectively interact with industries for a result-oriented correlation, essential for building and strengthening the human capital of the country.”

Moving beyond human relations functions, the council aimed at holistically covering all aspects of industry and intellectual capital, said a press release.

As a follow-up, the second symposium was held on May 9 and 10, 2008 at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay.

Here, eminent speakers from the industry and academia spoke on topics including cross-disciplinary areas such as design, IPR, human resource development and their impact on the nation.

In addition to these, industries and universities presented case studies of industry-academia collaborations in engineering, science, management and humanities.

Third symposium

In order to look into the ideas and recommendations that emerged from the second symposium, the third symposium, to be hosted by the Pondicherry University, would have a number of sessions and discussion on models of industry-academia partnerships, success stories and key aspects.

On the first day, the symposium would have a panel discussion on industry-academia partnerships: successful models in other countries.

The session would take a look at a few successful country-models of industry-academia partnerships, which have been the driving force for all-round development in those countries.

The roles played by stakeholders including policy makers, industry, academia, industry association, venture capital industries in those countries would be discussed.

Another session on case studies of how industry and academia have made the difference in their business by partnering with each other would be part of the symposium. Speakers from the industry and academia would share their experience, added the release.

Various aspects of industry-academia partnerships including the need for relationship for “long-term leadership and sustained growth of industry, for universities to provide world-class education in line with industry requirements” would be discussed.

The session would explore new areas and opportunities for collaboration between industry and academia, including changes in curriculum or new courses, new age education systems, industry support for research programme and funding support for partnership projects.
