Social service does not mean merely collecting money and being part of some organisation. Like charity beings at home, social work should also become a part of one’s life. Helping a person cross the road, taking an injured person to hospital, not encouraging child labour… these are small steps that will go a long way.
Today, though the world has developed politically, economically and scientifically, social and human values have declined due to rampant industrialisation. There is also imbalance in the concentration of wealth.
Some people and countries are very rich while others continue to remain poor. Let us take the example of cities where there is a lot of glitter due to the lavish lifestyle of the people. But on the outskirts of the cities, we find people living in the darkness of poverty. These people strive hard to get their necessities while the rich live luxuriously.
The culprit
Due to poverty, there is an increase in the crime rate. No one is born a criminal but it is poverty which makes criminals out of people.
The underprivileged class is present in each and every country of the world. No doubt, a million efforts have been made by the government and private organisations. But a lot needs to be done to bring up the living standards of the poor.
The United Nations is playing a predominant role in this regard. In spite of all these efforts, there is no change in the status of the underprivileged. This is mainly due to the reason that man as an individual has not realised his duties towards others of his land.
To inculcate the virtue of social service, every college has to dedicate at least one afternoon in a week towards educating students about the merits of social service, thus helping them in becoming good citizens. They should be educated about nationalism and kindness towards other creatures. Students can form groups and educate the illiterates. They can help people held during floods, mishaps, earthquakes etc.
Students should be taught the virtues of equality and fraternity. They should help eradicate the dowry evil. They can adopt orphans and give them education, so that the latter do not grow up to be criminals.
They should bring the world together by mixing with people of other cultures and traditions. They should protect and preserve wildlife and forests.
Even as the modern man is relishing materials available in the world there is a dire need for honest and dedicated social service because an innocent smile on face of a child, contentment on the face of an elderly person and cheer in eyes of a woman can never be bought by money.
A little bit of love and affection can do wonders.
