SASTRA University, Thanjavur, has awarded its Ramanujan Prize for 2008 to 27-year-old Akshay Venkatesh, Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, USA.
Established in 2005, the annual prize carrying a cash component of $ 10,000 is given to youngsters (below 32 years) making outstanding contributions to Mathematics.
K.N. Ganesh, Director, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, presented the award to Professor Venkatesh during the inaugural of an International Conference on Number Theory and Modular Forms at SASTRA’s Kumbakonam campus last month, in the presence of the University’s Dean - Planning and Development, S. Vaidhyasubramaniam.
The far reaching contributions that Professor Venkatesh (recently elevated to the rank of Full professor at Stanford University) himself made and in collaboration with other Mathematicians in wide areas of Mathematics include number theory, automorphic forms, representation theory, locally symmetric spaces and ergodic theory.
Prof. Venkatesh was awarded the Woods Memorial Prize in 1997 at the University of Western Australia when he finished his undergraduate degree.
Prof. Venkatesh’s entry into research began as a Ph.D student at Princeton in 1998 under Professor Peter Sarnak, one of the most versatile and influential mathematicians at present.
