Coimbatore college clinches second place in Design ACE



STATE WINNERS: The team from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, won the second prize at the Design ACE, a State-level engineering design contest, held in Chennai. They are receiving the prize from Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Coimbatore, R. Radhakrishnan (fourth left).

The first edition of Design ACE 2009, a State-level engineering design contest, conducted by Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR) in Chennai recently, saw a good response from engineering colleges.

Out of the 100-plus teams, 15 got through to the finals. The three-month long contest was an endeavour by BWIR to promote and encourage design capabilities among engineering students. The contestants had to submit an innovative design and a business p roblem design along with a short write-up. The finalists had to present the model in front of a jury in 15 minutes.

V. Vignesh and N. Keerthivasan of G.K.M. College of Engineering and Technology, Chennai, emerged winners. They got a purse of Rs. 30,000. The team of B. Manoj and K. Ramkumar of PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, won the second prize of Rs. 25,000, while K.Y. Balaji and S. Suganesh of Sona College of Technology, Salem, bagged the third prize of Rs. 20,000.The three team members were also offered a paid internship at BWIR to work on real-time projects and licences of SolidWorks. Senthil Kumar, Vice-President and Senior Partner – Operations, BWIR, said the contest was an exercise to bridge the divide between the industry and academics. The company would also organise regular workshops, live projects, community programmes and internships for students and faculty as part of this initiative.
