Beyond programming

SRUTHI KRISHNAN

The specialisations in the IT sector are vast and job opportunities are good

Sriram V. Rajagopal

Talking about areas other than Application Development and Maintenance that have considerable job opportunities in the IT sector, Sriram V. Rajagopal, assistant vice-president, HR, Cognizant, says that content and design services is one such area.

This comprises web solutions, e-learning solutions and user documentation solutions. With increased need for providing best-in-class user experience and user adoption services to customers, there is an accelerated demand for qualified web and graphic designers, content developers, technical writers, instructional designers, web programmers and language experts, he adds.

Technical writers

For the role of technical writers and instructional designers, while students with a degree in English literature, mass communication or journalism stand a strong chance, in some cases engineers with good English language skills are also considered, says Mr. Rajagopal.

Web, graphic designers

For the role of web and graphic designers, it is not just essential to have knowledge of design tools such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Flash, but candidates need to have strong creativity and a sense of design.

While students with a degree in visual communication or mass communication stand a bright chance, other graduates with strong design skills and knowledge of design tools do have immense opportunities in this area.

Analytics

In simple terms, analytics is the sophisticated analysis and use of business data to enable fact-based decision-making at every level of your organisation.

Analytics can drive superior performance — from customer management to supply chain to product or service development and strategic planning.

The educational requirements for this area are computational math, operations research and statistics, again with a passion for number crunching and analysis.

Language specialists

There is a demand for language specialists for managing technical services such as testing, IT infrastructure management and software programming, says Mr. Rajagopal. Also, businesses need translation experts in various languages for documentation while dealing with customers from across the globe.

Science or engineering graduates with knowledge of a foreign language (such as Japanese or German) backed with a certification do stand a bright opportunity in the technical areas. Arts graduates with knowledge of a foreign language will have strong opportunities for translation.
