Animation -- serious career option


My brother wants to make his career in the field of animation. So, please tell me which group he should take at Intermediate level. Tell me about the institutes offering courses in animation?

Animation is among the fastest growing industries in India.

Apart from making cartoons and animation movies, animation finds application in areas like advertisements, computer games, special effects, web entertainment programmes, virtual reality, computer/web based tutorials and fashion designing, interior designing, engineering, architecture, medicine and business (models, demos and presentations).

Various elements

Animation is a serious career option that encompasses elements like story telling, character designing, audio effects, animation and editing.

Creativity is the basic requirement to succeed in this field. Coming to skills, you need intensive training in 2-D and 3-D animation.

Flair

Flair for drawing and caricature is an added advantage. And you can begin your career as content provider, editor, animator, designer, graphic artist, illustrator, multimedia developer, programmer, project manager or video technician.

Animation is available as an academic discipline at bachelors, masters, diploma and PG diploma levels.

There are several government, autonomous and private institutions offering these courses.

Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad offers Bachelor of Fine Arts with animation as a specialisation.

The eligibility criterion is +2.

B.Sc Animation and Multimedia from BITS, Jaipur.

The eligibility criteria are pass in class X and XII with minimum 60 per cent marks and minimum 50 per cent marks in all the required subjects at +2 level.

The admission is based on merit rank and performance at Creativity Aptitude Test.

Picasso Animation College, Delhi offers B.Sc Animation and M.Sc Animation.

The eligibility for B.Sc is +2 in any stream. For M.Sc it is graduation in any discipline. For details, log on to www.picasso.co.in

Pran’s Media Institute offers B. Sc in Animation and Master of Animation.

IIT Mumbai

Industrial Design Centre (IIT Mumbai) offers Master of Design programme in Interaction Design and Animation.

The eligibility criterion is bachelor’s degree/ diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Design, Interior Design, Professional Diploma of NID, Professional Diploma of CEPT (five year programme), BFA - Professional course in Applied Arts/Fine Arts, GD Arts (five year professional course) with minimum of 55 per cent marks or masters degree in Arts/ Science/ Computer Applications with a minimum of 55 per cent marks and good potentials and aptitude for design.

Candidates having five-year GD Art Degree/ Diploma after 10th standard need to have either completed 12th standard examination or have additional one year of working experience.

The admission is based on performance at CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design).

National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad offers Graduate Diploma Programme in Design and Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design with Animation Film Design as specialisation.

The admission is based on performance at entrance test.

Film and Television Institute of India, Pune offers one-and-a-half year Certificate Course in Film and Television with Animation and Computer Graphics as specialisation.

The eligibility criterion is + 2.

Preference will be given to candidates having completed Diploma from Fine Arts colleges.

C-DAC’s NMRC ( www.cdac.in) offers Diploma in Advanced Computer Arts. Admission is based on performance at entrance test.

Arena Animation Academy ( www.arenaanimationacademy.com) offers Arena Multimedia Specialist Programme.

WEBEL Academy ( www.webel-india.com) offers one-year diploma courses in 2D Animation and 3D Animation

To take up a course in animation at the bachelor’s level, one can opt for any group at the Intermediate level.
