Q & A

Engineers are always welcome

Are there any opportunities for engineers in the Central Government? My son is in the fourth semester of Electrical Engineering. He is bright in academics.

Gopinath M.K.

via e-mail, Bangalore

Engineering graduates look forward to qualify and join the Indian Engineering Services (IES) which has been given an important position by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The written examination for joining the service comprises two sections — Section I consisting of objective-type questions and Section II of conventional papers. Both Sections cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering discipline viz. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, which is the I phase of the process of recruitment. Phase II is the Personality Test.

The scheme of examination is as follows:

Paper I (Objective Type) (General Ability Test): Part A: General English and Part B: General Studies (total 200 marks)

Paper II and III (Objective Type) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering respectively (total of 400 marks)

Paper IV and V (conventional essay type) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering respectively (total of 400 marks)

Once the candidate is successful in the written examination, the Personality Test is conducted for a total of 200 marks, thus adding the total to 1200.

Love of physics

I am in Plus Two (ISC) and I want to become a physicist. I prefer the engineering curriculum to the Bachelor of Science mode. Please suggest a good course in engineering that would help me shape a career in research in pure physics or atomic physics.

Sudesh Kumar

via e-mail, Bangalore

Physicists study a wide range of physical phenomena spanning all length scales: from the sub-atomic particles from which all ordinary matter is made (particle physics) to the behaviour of the material universe as a whole (cosmology). There are numerous branches of physics and each has its corresponding specialities. The undergraduate curriculum generally includes Theoretical Physics, Astronomy, Electricity, Optics, Quantum Physics, Nuclear Physics and Solid State Physics, to mention a few. At a later stage you can specialise in Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics, Bio Physics, Chemical Physics, Geo Physics, Material Science, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, and Plasma Physics.

At the engineering level (viz., Bachelor of Technology or Engineering), universities do not have programmes that focus on Physics; but have a compulsory paper that will take you through the basics. Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore-560 012 ( www.physics.iisc.ernet.in), is a good place to be in. You can pursue the integrated programme leading to Ph.D. after graduation. The areas of research are exponential. You can contact the Chairman of the Department of Physics on Ph: 2293 2315. E-mail: chairman@physics.iisc.ernet.in

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) ( www.jncasr.ac.in) is another place that is worth considering. You should contact The Coordinator, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Jakkur P.O., Bangalore-560 064. E-mail: academic@jncasr.ac.in

At the beginning of each trimester, on-campus teaching modules are scheduled as follows: I trimester: six days; II trimester: three days; III trimester: three days. Besides the face-to-face sessions, the Hughes Net Global Education provides for classroom sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Graduates or those posses an equivalent degree from any recognised university or institution with five years of managerial work experience or post-graduate degree/ engineering degree or equivalent from any recognised institution with three years of managerial work experience are eligible to enrol.

Add-on qualifications
