The management of Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) has prepared an action plan to curb ragging in and outside the college premises and provide a harmonious and healthy atmosphere for the students.
Consequences
The institution has taken up a programme to enlighten the seniors on ‘Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act 1997’, consequences if resorted to ragging, punishment for the accused and other legal implications and appealed to the students to keep the campus free from ragging.
“VSU management is planning to create an anti-ragging movement by organising awareness meetings for the students and faculty by explaining the meaning of ragging, sensitising the students with revenue and police personnel and psychiatrists over the menace. We advise the students not to resort to ragging and spoil the future,’ said the university Vice-Chancellor C. R.Visweswara Rao.
Speaking to The Hindu he said the university has constituted three committees – ‘Anti-Ragging Committee’, ‘Anti-Ragging Squad’ and ‘Monitoring Committee to Prevent Ragging’ – with students, faculty and parents. A power point presentation was given on the Act and the guidelines of Supreme Court over prevention of ragging.
A meeting was held on July 22, and the members of the committees were asked to closely monitor the places like class rooms, bus stops, canteen and play ground and interact with the students to prevent ragging and teasing incidents. Instructions were given to the members to bring to the notice of the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar immediately, if any student notice ragging, said Mr. Rao.
Posters explaining the punishment for ragging, mentioning the Sections under he/she would be booked, action from the institution and other details were displayed in the notice boards.
A complaint box has been arranged in the college to receive complaints from the students.
An undertaking from the students and parents was taken from the students during admission that they will not resort to any misbehaviour, ragging and teasing in the institution and if so, they will be liable for punishment/debarred from the institution, said the V-C
University Registrar V. Narayana Reddy said the committee members and the staff were asked to be vigilant in and outside the college premises.
Besides, the names of the committee members along with their phone numbers were displayed in the notice boards and students who notice ragging may inform the members or to the management.
The second meeting on ‘Preventive Measures on Ragging and Punishment for the Accused’ will be held on August 3. The university will organise an interaction programme for seniors and juniors on the next day. VSU will become a role model for all the professional, PG and degree colleges in the district in preventing the menace, said Mr. Reddy.
