‘Think differently and try to excel in a team’

Passion for doing things differently and diligently and the drive to excel in a team are the two prominent factors that budding engineers and management students should posses to create opportunities for themselves in the multi-national companies.

The top companies around the world don’t get floored by your academic record alone but these additional factors prove to be decisive when it comes to impressing the HR managers.

“And students should concentrate on developing these skills,” says David Lobo, Head of Human Resources, GE India.

Admitting that there is a great talent in India, he says as an HR manager he looks for additional qualities like leadership skills, social behaviour combined with solid academic background while recruiting since these are critical for not only getting into an organisation but also for further growth.

Students these days are smart enough to make use of the leadership programmes offered by the corporate world and he says their talent and confidence is amazing.

One such programme offered by GE is the Corporate Entry-level Leadership Programme that offer college graduates prized development opportunities that combine real-world experience with formal classroom study.

Through a series of rotating assignments, typically over a period of two years, young professionals receive accelerated professional development, world-class mentors, and global networking that cuts across GE’s businesses.

Mr. David says GE is not only looking at top institutes that claim to have the cream but also lesser-known institutes during its talent hunt through a variety of programmes like the inter-business school competition organised as a part of the GE Day recently.

The programme not only attracted talent from across the country but also provided an opportunity for them to display their creative talents to the senior leadership on a big stage.

Mr. David feels such programmes also help the senior managers to understand how the younger generation is thinking and create such environment in the companies for them to thrive.

The GE in particular wants to reach out to students through a variety of programmes to get a flavour of their future managers.
