What is the meaning and origin of ‘pin drop silence’?
(S. Yuktha, Bangalore)
Whenever Tendulkar gets out early in a match, we hear our commentators say, ‘There is pin drop silence in the stadium.’ Believe it or not, this expression which is frequently heard in India is not used by native speakers of English. It is an idiom that we have created. Native speakers of English would say, ‘You could hear a pin drop’.
* The house was unusually quiet. You could hear a pin drop.
