There are several higher study options for B.Tech. degree holders in electrical or electrical and electronics engineering. For your M.Tech. level programmes besides electrical and electronics, you can choose any of these specializations—power electronics and drives, power systems, electrical machines, control and instrumentation, applied electronics, embedded systems, VLSI design, nanotechnology, nano-medical sciences, and remote sensing and geo-informatics systems.
Many engineering colleges and institutes offer M.Tech. degree in electrical or electrical and electronics engineering and related disciplines. Almost of these colleges admit students for courses based on their score in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Clearing the GATE makes one eligible for scholarship from the Union ministry of Human Resource Development. In admission interviews, 70 per cent weightage is given for the GATE score and 30 per cent for academic merit. Top level institutions admit only those with high score.
In Tamil Nadu, a common admission test is conducted for admission to the M.E. and M.Tech. programme through a single-window system.
In Kerala, the State government’s college of engineering, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram, offer M.Tech. degree in electrical and electronics with specialisation in electrical machines, power systems, control systems, navigation control and so on.
The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, offers the M.Tech. electrical and electronics engineering course.
The Government Engineering College, Thrissur, offers an M.Tech. electrical engineering (power systems) course.
The minimum qualifications for admission to these courses are a pass in B.Tech. electrical/electrical and communication engineering with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate and a GATE score.
If sufficient number of GATE qualified candidates are not available, selection will be made on the basis of marks obtained in the BE or B.Tech. examination. Only Keralities will be selected this way.
•TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, ( www.tkmce.org.in) conducts M.Tech. in electrical and electronics engineering, industrial instrumentation and control. B.E. or B.Tech. in electrical or instrumentation or electronics engineering with 60 per cent marks are eligible for admission.
•The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi, offers an M.Tech. in electronics course with specialisation in digital electronics and microwave and radar electronics. An M.Tech. in opto electronics and laser technology course is also offered. Those who have first class B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering, electrical and electronics engineering may apply. For the M.Tech. computer and information science course, first class B.Tech. degree holders in any branch may apply. Selection will be based on the GATE score. If sufficient number of GATE qualified applicants is not available, a department level test will be held for others.
•The DOEACC Centre, Kozhikode, conducts an M.Tech. course in embedded systems. Those with BE or B.Tech degree in electronics, electrical and instrumentation engineering.
•The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappally, ( www.nitt.edu) offers an M.Tech. in power systems course for electrical and electrical and electronics engineering graduates. Selection is based on the GATE score or national level entrance test.
•The NIT, Calicut ( www.nitc.ac.in) conducts an M.Tech. degree course in electrical engineering with specialisation in instrumentation and control systems and power electronics. The entry qualifications are B.Tech. and a GATE score.
•The Amrita School of Engineering, Ettimadai, Coimbatore, offers M.Tech. course in power electronics, embedded systems, remote sensing and wireless sensor network, computational engineering and networking, computer vision and image processing.
•The Amrita School of engineering in Coimbatore, Bangalore and Amritapuri (Kollam) conduct M.Tech. courses in VLSI (Very Large System Integration) design. Those with B.E./B.Tech. degrees with at least 60 per cent marks may apply. Selection is based on academic merit and interviews or group discussion.
Applicants with GATE score get preference. Those appearing for the final year qualifying examinations may also apply ( www.amrita.edu). M.E. or M.Tech. course in robotics and the M.Tech. nanotechnology courses are other higher study options for electrical engineering graduates.
Top institutes
The IITs in Madras ( www.iitm.ac.in) and Kharagpur (http://gate.iitkgp.ac.in/mtech) conduct the M.Tech. electrical engineering course. Selection is based on the GATE score.
