Diffusion of ‘Gyan’ is the motto

Gyanvani - the educational radio FM channel from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is on the task to impart Gyan (knowledge) in the main towns and cities in the country by its deviant kind of educational content.

Gyanvani a brainchild of IGNOU was started in the year 2001 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh by then Human Resource Minister Mr. Murali Manohar Joshi. The second radio station was started in Bangalore. For Hyderabad it was started in 2006.

Andhra Pradesh has two Gyanvani stations one in Vishakapatnam on 106.4 MHZ other is in Hyderabad on 105.6 MHZ.

Gyanvani, Hyderabad is broadcasting a variety of programmes with the collaboration of International Radio Organisations include Radio Canada International(RCI) , Radio Australia, Radio Deustchivelli.

Students’ needs

“I like to tune gyanvani on 105.6 MHZ for its different kind of educational programmes which suits the KG (kindergarten) to PG (post graduation) level students’ needs. Programmes broadcast by this station are more helpful to enrich their skills than other FM channels that dish out songs and gossip only,” says Bhavana, a degree student in Dilshukhnagar

Some of the unique programmes being broadcast by Gyanvani, Hyderabad are French lessons on Saturdays and Sundays, prepared by RCI, German lessons and science programmes on Wednesdays by Radio Deustchivelli, Health and science programmes by Radio Australia.

Other important programmes are “career guidance” on Tuesdays, quiz programmes on regular basis, phone-in programmes with eminent persons of different fields like health, and legal, financial sectors on Fridays.

It is also catering to the needs of children who wish to go through their lessons through radio with clear voice and quality signals.

Lessons for primary classes are being broadcast in Telugu, Urdu and Hindi languages in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh Sarva Siksha Abhiyaan (APSSA)
