Buoyant domestic demand, financial inclusion in sectors such as banking, insurance, mutual funds and stock markets, the launch of Unique Identification Database (UID) project and a burgeoning middle class are expected to propel the country’s economy on to a higher growth trajectory. Many global players are setting up shop in the country, while Indian multinationals are establishing operations overseas.
A similar growth is envisaged for services in the coming years. The growth in all these sectors is expected to stimulate demand for professional managers. The rapid expansion of the healthcare sector and implementation of the National Rural Health Mission also calls for quality management.
The T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) in Manipal, which has sensed this need for professionals in these sectors, will be starting three new Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) courses in June 2010. They are in Banking and Financial Services; International Business; and Healthcare Management. All the three are full-time residential courses of two-year duration. The intake for each course is 60.
All the three courses are subject to approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). According to the Chairman (Admissions) of TAPMI S. Sudeep Kumar, “The AICTE approval is expected any day now.”
Eligibility
The qualification for all the three courses is a degree (10+2+3) in any discipline with a minimum of 50 per cent of marks from any university recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). This also applies to those with professional qualifications like Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting and Company Secretary.
The candidates should also have valid CAT/GMAT scores. The Institute will also consider their academic record, work experience and participation in extra-curricular activities. The candidates will then be short-listed to attend Group Discussions/Personal Interviews in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Manipal. The final selection will be based on performance in TAPMI’s admission process.
‘Healthy mix’
The format for admission to the Healthcare Management course is slightly different. Says Prof. Kumar, “We will select some candidates through the regular CAT/GMAT stream, but for those with a medical/paramedical/biomedical/biotech background, we propose to hold a separate ‘TAPMI Admission Test’ to ensure that the batch has a healthy mix of students from allied fields too.”
Students appearing for the final year degree examination can also apply for these three courses. But they have to provide proof of their completion of graduation by the time they join the PGDM courses. They would have to provide their passing certificates and testimonials within the date stipulated by TAPMI.
Fees
The fee for the entire PGDM course is Rs. 7.15 lakh, which also includes course material. The hostel fee is approximately Rs. 1.39 lakh for the entire course. Students have to pay monthly food bills of about Rs. 2,400. The last date for submission of applications forms is December 10.
According to Prof. Kumar, TAPMI is starting these courses taking into account the demand for professionals in these sectors. “In the case of PGDM in the healthcare sector, we want to synergize the strengths of Manipal, which is the hub of medical education. Some of our recruiters in the past evinced interest in absorbing candidates with such a background,” he said.
