Options for civil engineering graduates
Better prospects: Meritorious civil engineering graduates with a good GATE score has a plethora of opportunities for higher studies
I have completed B.Tech. in civil engineering and would like to know if can opt for a Master’s in architecture. If so where can I pursue the course and what are the criteria for admission? Kindly provide me the higher study options for civil engineering graduates.

Only the Bachelor’s degree holders in architecture (B.Arch.) are eligible for admision to the Master’s programme in the discipline. However, the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi-110002, provides specialisation options for meritorious civil engineering graduates in its M.Arch. programme and related fields.
The school conducts the two-year M.Arch. programme with specialisation in architecture conservation, industrial design and urban design; Master of building engineering and management programme (MBEM); Master of landscape architecture (MLA) and Master of planning course with specilisation in environment planning, housing, regional planning and transport planning.
The M.Arch. programmes are open to those with B.Arch. degrees, B.Planning or equivalent degrees. For M.Arch. in industrial design, students with B.Arch. or equivalent degrees are eligible.
The MBEM course is open to those with B.Arch., B.E./B.Tech. (civil) or equivalent degrees.Applicants should have obtained at least 55 per cent marks in aggregate in the qualifying examinations. SC/ST students need only 50 per cent marks. Selection is based on a test and interview.
Those who have valid GATE scores or have passed the UGC’s National Eligibility Test for Junior Research Fellowship and Lectureship are eligible for a monthly scholarship. For details visit www.spaernet.in.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee ( www.iitr.ernet.in.) conducts M.Arch. in urban and rural planning. B.Arch. or Bachelor’s degree holders in civil engineering are eligible for admission.
The Government College of Engineering, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram, conducts an M.Arch. course with planning (housing) as a specialisation. Five seats are available in the general category. Those with B.Tech. in civil engineering will be considered for admission. The Council of Architecture is a statutory regulatory body which deals with education in this field and any details regarding courses can be sought from it. Alternative routes
The Indian Institute of Architects provides facilities for civil engineering graduates to appear for its membership examinations. They are exempted from appearing in some subjects and papers of the examinations.
The Institute of Town Planners conducts an associateship examination leading to the award of the associate membership of the institute. Civil engineering or architecture graduates with a minimum 55 per cent marks in the degree examination can appear for the test. Design
Another suitable higher study option for engineering graduates is design, The IITs in Bombay, Delhi and Kanpur and the IISc. Bangalore conducts the Master of Design (M.Des.) programmes. Qulaifying in the common entrance examination for design (CEED) is required for admission to the two-year course.
The National Institute of Design, Paldi, Ahmedabad-380007 provides opportunities for graduates in engineering and architecture to do a postgraduate diploma programme in design. For more details visit the website www.nid.edu.
Other options
M.Tech. in structural engineering is another suitable option for civil engineering graduates. Geo-technical engineering; water resources engineering and management; environmental engineering; transportation systems engineering; traffic and transportation planning; offshore structures; environmental geo-technology; alternative hydro energy systems; conservation of rivers and lakes; building science and technology, computer-aided design; geomatics engineering; geotechnical engineering; hydraulics engineering; soil dynamics; structural dynamics; computer science and engineering; information technology; computer-aided structural analysis and design; software engineering; construction engineering and management; disaster management; infrastructure engineering; remote sensing and geo-informatic systems; computational engineering and science; energy technology and environmental management are some other specilised subjects that civil engineering graduates can pursue at the M.E./M.Tech. level.
•The College of Engineering, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram, conducts M.Tech. (civil) course with specialisation in structural engineering. Entry qualification is B.Tech. in civil engineering with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate and a valid GATE score.
•Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam ( www.mace.ac.in) offers M.Tech. (Computer-aided structural engineering) on self-financing basis. Entry qualification is B.E./B.Tech. in civil engineering with 55 per cent marks. Those who have a valid GATE score will get stipends.
•The Cochin University of Science and Technology offers M.Tech. (Computer-aided structural analysis and design) and M.Tech. (Computer and Information Science). •Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani ( www.bits-pilani.ac.in) offers M.E. (civil) with specialisation in structural engineering and transportation engineering.

Eligibility is a pass in B.Arch. or B.Tech. in civil engineering with at least 50 per cent marks. GATE qualified applicants will get preference.
PG programmes in management or MBA are also good higher study option for engineering graduates.
