PG diploma

I read about the one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management and related programmes that are conducted by Bangalore University through various colleges. My question is, are these programmes on par with the MBA of any University?

Karthik

via e-mail, Bangalore

Bangalore University and designated affiliated colleges offer the one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in various areas of management but they cannot be considered as equal to Master of Business Administration. A MBA of any University in India is of two-year duration. Those undertaking the MBA by distance education spend a total of three years as per the norms of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The AICTE-recognised Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration/Business Management (PGDBA/PGDBM) is for two years. The IIMs and some of the leading institutes like XLRI and XIM provide the two-year programmes, some of which are considered as equivalent to the MBA of any University as per the norms of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

The one-year programmes are primarily modelled for working executives who want to specialise in a specific area of Business Administration.

Go for B.Ed

I have a degree in Science. I am interested in becoming a teacher. Should I take D.Ed or B.Ed?

Rukmini

via e-mail

In order to pursue the Diploma in Education (D.Ed) (two-year course), one should have passed the Pre-University/Intermediate/+2 examination. A Bachelor's degree is mandatory for appearing for the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), which is a one-year programme. You should pursue B.Ed and specialise in Science. This will keep you in good stead for a career as a teacher.

XIM course

Does the Xavier Institute of Management, Orissa, conduct any online programme? I am presently employed with a firm and am working in the Production department. I want to get a short-term degree in business management from an institute of repute.

Nityanand Bhambri

via e-mail

The Xavier Institute of Management (XIM) (www.ximb.ac.in), Bhubaneshwar, offers online education to working executives. One such programme is the Post-Graduate Certificate Programme in Business Management (PGCBM). The eligibility criteria:

A three-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline.

Minimum work experience of two years.

XIM conducts the programme during the weekends, which will help working executives. The online video conferencing with teachers/counsellors and discussions with the peers will help in quality learning. For more details you should speak with the admissions counsellor on 022-30313587 or SMS ‘LIVE XIMB' to 56677.

Don't give up

I have not been able to clear the Pre-University examination on two attempts. At this point I have to clear one paper in Mathematics. Should I discontinue and prepare for another course?

Nilesh Saket

via e-mail

You must complete the programme as you have invested a lot of your time. Mathematics is no doubt a bugbear for some students but you can pass the paper by intensive study and practice. Revising the previous question papers will help. If you still need support, contact your Maths teacher in college.

Making a shift at this juncture is not conducive as you will have start from scratch in the new study venture.

I am planning to go the U.S. for studies. I want the address of the U.S. Consulate where I can get relevant information.

S. Venugopal

via e-mail, Bangalore

You need to have quality information in order to decide on your plans for moving to U.S. The U.S. Consulate has a virtual office in Bangalore and you should get in touch with it for all your requirements. The hyperlink of the virtual office can be accessed at: http://bangalore.usvpp.gov/

Course in First Aid

Does any institute in Bangalore offer a course in First Aid? I want details.

Mohammed Irshad

via e-mail, Bangalore

The St. John's Ambulance Association conducts a short-term First Aid programme. You should contact the Administrator at St. John's Ambulance Association, 8 {+t} {+h} A Main, Sampangiramnagar, Bangalore. Ph: 22223384.

EMRI conducts long-term programmes in emergency medical management. The address: EMRI, Devar Yamjal, Medchal Road, Hyderabad-500 014.

Pursuing Law

I want to meet a faculty member of the University Law College in Bangalore to understand the various aspects of study in Law and plan for my higher education. I am presently studying in I PUC.

Sebastian Joseph

After completion of PUC, one can join the five-year integrated law course wherein one can pursue B.A./BBM and Law programmes.

One can complete graduation and join Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) which will be a three-year programme.

Most students today prefer the five-year programme as it helps in placement. The University Law College (ULC) (established in 1948) (www.bub.ernet.in/sub/faculty/Law/Sub/about.html) and the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) (www.nls.ac.in) have established themselves as niche players in the faculty of Law in India today.

The ULC can be contacted at Palace Road, Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore.

The NLSIU address: Nagarbhavi, Bangalore-560072. Ph: 23213160, 23160532. Email: registrar@nls.ac.in

I want to know if a MBBS graduate can pursue the Hospital Administration programme. I have nine years of experience.

Dr. Pradyumna

via e-mail

Yes, any person with a MBBS qualification can pursue the programme designated as Master of Hospital Administration (MHA) on the campus mode or get admitted as a distance learning student.

Don't be in a hurry

Can I pursue two postgraduation programmes simultaneously? I am presently pursuing a Science programme and have interest in pursuing another one that is compatible with the first.

Srikanth

via e-mail

It is advisable that you finish the first programme and then contemplate pursuing another one.

Pursuing two programmes together is not advisable as you will not be able to focus.
