Kindly provide me with the information on colleges or institutions that offer M.Tech degree in electrical and electronics engineering.

SARATH C. EMAIL

There are several higher study options for graduates in electrical and electronics engineering including M.Tech. in these branches itself. The specialisations include M.Tech. in power electronics and drives, power systems, electrical machines, control and instrumentation, applied electronics, embedded systems, VLSI design, nanotechnology, nano medical sciences, remote sensing and geo-information systems.

Many engineering colleges and institutes offer postgraduate degree courses in electrical or electrical and electronics engineering. Almost all of these colleges admit students on the basis of the marks scored in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Clearing the test makes one eligible for scholarships offered by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. In admission interviews, 70 per cent weightage is given for the GATE score and 30 per cent for academic merit. Top-level institutions admit only those candidates who have high scores in GATE.

In Tamil Nadu, a common admission test (TANCET) is conducted for admission to the ME and M.Tech. programme through a single-window system ( www.annavuni.edu/tancet2010). Candidates from other States can also appear for the entrance test.

In Kerala, Government Engineering College, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram, offers M.Tech. degree in electrical and electronics with specialisation in electrical machines, power systems, control systems, navigation control aid and so on.

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam offers M.Tech. degree in electrical and electronics engineering. The minimum qualifications for admission to these courses are a pass in B.Tech electrical/ electrical and communication engineering with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate and a valid GATE score.

If sufficient number of GATE-qualified candidates are not available, selection will be made on the basis of marks obtained in BE/ B.Tech examination. Only Keralities will be selected this way.

TKM College of Engineering, Kollam offers M.Tech. degree in electrical and electronics engineering, industrial instrumentation and control. BE/ B.Tech. degree holders in electrical/instrumentation or electronics engineering with 60 per cent marks are eligible for admission. Website: www.tkmce.org.in.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi, offers an M.Tech. degree course in electronics with specialisation in digital electronics and microwave and radar electronics. An M.Tech. degree course in opto electronics and laser technology is also offered. Those who have a first class B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering or electrical and electronics engineering may apply.

For the M.Tech. degree course in computer and information science, first class B.Tech. degree holders in any branch may apply. The selection is based on GATE score. If sufficient number of GATE-qualified applicants is not available, a department-level test will be held for others.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut, offers an M.Tech. degree course in electrical engineering with specialisation in instrumentation and control systems and power electronics. The entry qualification is a B.Tech. degree with a valid GATE score. Website: www.nitc.ac.in

The NIT, Tiruchirappally, offers M.Tech. degree course in power system for electrical/ electrical and electronics engineering graduates. The selection is based on GATE score or a national-level entrance test. Website: www.nitt.edu

The DOEACC Centre, Kozhikode, conducts an M.Tech. course in embedded systems. Those with BE/ B.Tech degree in electronics, electrical and instrumentation engineering can apply.

The Amrita School of Engineering, Ettimadai, Coimbatore, offers M.Tech. course in power electronics, embedded systems, remote-sensing and wireless sensor networks, computational engineering and networking, computer vision and image processing.

The Amrita School of Engineering in Coimbatore, Bangalore and Amritapuri (Kollam) conducts an M.Tech. degree course in VLSI design. Those having a BE/ B.Tech. degree with at least 60 per cent marks may apply. The selection is based on academic merit, entrance test and interview. Applicants with GATE score will get preference. Those appearing for the final qualifying examination may also apply. Website: www.amrita.edu

Plethora of opportunities: Almost all colleges admit students for postgraduate engineering degree courses on the basis of the marks scored in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
