University of Wales looks for business links in Hyderabad
Foreign universities trying to draw Indian students are passe. Not a month passes without some overseas university holding an education ‘mela'. However, the University of Wales, Newport, begs to differ. Its focus is not so much on the traditional courses but on the emerging opportunities in film animation and computer games.
Recently, when Dr. Peter Noyes, vice-chancellor, University of Wales, flew in to Hyderabad, he did not go on a student recruitment drive. Rather, he explored business opportunities there, something universities normally do not engage in. He held talks with a few animation companies to forge trade links which can be mutually beneficial. The University of Wales already has a well established curriculum link with Osmania University. But now it is looking forward to promoting business opportunities in the animation industry and computer games. The course in script writing and theatre arts offered by Osmania University is at a nascent stage and can be further honed. “We have a high level of expertise in these areas and want to share it with Osmania University and the film industry here. The different approaches we adopt for computer games and animation can be of immense help,” Dr. Noyes said.
The three-year course offered at Newport in computer games and animation combines professional practice with innovation, enabling one to become a creative and critically aware graduate. It also offers a master's programme in documentary film and documentary photography. To suit the needs of animation companies and students in Hyderabad, the Wales University is prepared to design exclusive courses.
