New course launched
In the backdrop of increase in demand for well-trained biotechnologists for research and industries, National College, Tiruchi, has launched M.Sc., Biotechnology programme from 2011-12.
The programme, according to principal K. Anbarasu, involves training in advanced instrumentation techniques and operation of special equipment such as Fermentor and Bioreactor.
The college is also establishing research facilities for animal cell culture and plant tissue culture, he said, adding that the programme would be conducted with research-grade equipment used by the biotechnology industry. A concurrent PG Diploma programme will also be offered for the students in the second semester in Fermentation Technology to facilitate their placement in industries.
In animal cell culture technology, students will be exposed to the basics of Stem Cell Culture and ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology).
Faculty members with rich experience will play a mentoring role, motivating students to prepare for jobs and examinations like Junior Research Fellowship/ Senior Research Fellowship.
They would also involve students in projects and get their work published in scientific journals, Dr. Anbarasu said.
A counselling session conducted earlier this month by Department Head M. N. Abubacker to create an awareness on the existing opportunities attracted over 60 life science students.
