Fascinating spread

An exquisite display of art.

HANDLOOM TEXTILES and handicrafts from Madhya Pradesh and Orissa offer varied choices at two separate exhibitions currently on in the city. It is a wide spectrum from Mriganayanee's jute dhurries, chiks and marble artefacts to colourful patchwork garden umbrellas and wall hangings, silver filigree jewellery and soft stone icons from Utkalika. A strong sense of tribal aesthetics pervades both exhibitions.

Patachitra paintings, cards and book marks on display make for colourful gifts, along with beautiful palm leaf etchings which once recorded both mythology and scriptural texts in Orissa.

Oriya craftspersons still painstakingly etch episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as well as local legends on palm leaf scrolls stitched together to form pretty wall hangings. But it is in the celebration of textiles that the craftspersons of the two States continue to weave a rich, fabled legacy. Gossammar thin, ethereal Maheswaris and chanderis are the main attraction at Mriganayanee.

Utkalika has on display vibrant, intricate ikats in both saree and yardage in cotton and tussar. Sambhalipuri, katki and boomkai saris, dupattas and salwar kameez cloth are available at the exhibition in a variety of fascinating motifs and special borders, in soft and jewel tones, woven into thin fine cottons ideal for summer. The Mriganayanee exhibition is on till March 30 at 1st Floor, TNSEB complex, Luz Church Road. Utkalika is situated on the 1st Floor, Prince Plaza, Pantheon Road.
