Zestful quality fare

Kosmic music - Carnatic - masterpiece - D.K. Jayaraman - KM 1373C, KM1383C, KM 1393C, Price Rs.50 each.

EXCERPTS FROM the vocal concert of D. K. Jayaraman under the aegis of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 1979 accompanied by stalwarts Vellore Ramabhadran on the mridangam and Lalgudi Jayaraman on the violin have been released in a triple cassette album by Kosmic. The Mayamalavagowla kriti by Dikshitar on Lord Subramanya "Sri Nathadhi" is sung with total clarity of enunciation and the kalpanaswaras by the vocalist and the prompt rejoinders by the violinist are exemplary in terms of laya and imagination. Dikshitar's "Maha Ganapate" in Natanarayani, the swaroopa which often eludes the average musician and Shyama Sastri's "Devi Brova" in Chinthamani are rendered with complete fidelity to the grammar and bhava of both ragas. The 28th Mela Harikambhoji is not often taken up for detailed alapana as its janya Kambhoji. DKJ's expansion is quality fare without the raga losing its characteristic appeal. The violin maestro paddles his delineation in his own unique melodic fashion with total consciousness of not stepping into the prohibited terrains of Khamboji or Khamas.

"Chanithodi" of Tyagaraja at a brisk kalapramanam embellished with swaras in two speeds is immensely listenable. Kalyani expanded with mellifluent prayogas with "azhutham" and thick and thin shades pays rich dividends. The singer's essay of Todi reflects different hues of aesthetic consciousness. The concert signs off in style with the Mohanakalayani Tillana of Lalgudi Jayaraman, a Tillana composer of rare vintage. — S.P.
