Bhagavata mela

MELATTUR BHAGAVATA Mela Natya Vidya Sangam is conducting its annual Bhagavatamela festival at Melattur from April 30 to May 3.

Sri Lakshmi Nrisimha Jayanthi will be celebrated on May 3. At 10 a.m. Vishnu and Nrisimha puja will be performed at Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple.

During the Nrisimha Jayanthi celebrations in 2000, an electric spark went off and a fire broke out destroying property valued at over Rs. 3 lakhs.

To restore the sangam back to its normal, it invites contributions in the form of cheque/DD favouring the above sangam to: 70, North Street, Melattur - 614 301, Thanjavur district (Ph: 04374-273427).

Celebration at Saliyamangalam

The annual Vasanthotsava Sri Nrisimha Jayanthi festival will be celebrated at Saliyamangalam Village, in Thanjavur District, from May 3 to 5. As part of the festival Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Bhagavatha Mela Bhaktha Samajam, Saliyamangalam, will stage Bhagavatha Mela dance drama for three days at the agraharam.

Enacting Bhagavatha Mela dance plays has been in vogue in the village for the past 359 years. The plays presented in Telugu, began to be staged during the reign of King Achuthappa Nayak, who ruled over Thanjavur in the 16th century. "Bhakta Prahlada" will be staged on May 3, at 10 p.m., followed by "Sri Rukmini Parinayam" at 9 p.m., on May 4. The festival will conclude with Rukmini Kalyanam (at 7 a.m.) and Anjaneya Utsavam (at 7 p.m.) on May 5.

Donations for the Jayanthi may be sent to S. V. Venkatakrishnan, treasurer, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Bhagavatha Mela Bhaktha Samajam, No. 1/24, Agraharam, Saliyamangalam, Thanjavur District — 613 504 (Ph: 954374 - 239460).

Contributions for annadhaanam can be made by cheque or DD drawn in the name of Sri Anna Poorna and sent to the treasurer.
