IIFA awards
THE INTERNATIONAL Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards function will be held in Singapore on May 22. It hasattracted Indian and International stars including Mira Nair, Shekhar Kapoor,Angelina JolieJackie Chan andBo Derek.
The venue of the fifth Samsung IIFA awards will be held at the spectacular Singapore Indoor stadium. Launched four years ago at the Millennium Dome, London, the awards ceremony has travelled to various countries. The highpoint of the three-day extravaganza, the Singapore IIFA weekend 2004, will showcase the best of Indian cinema and provide a platform for interaction between the Indian film industry and the global media. For eligibilityin the Popular andTechnical categoriesthe films have to be released in India and in one territory outside India in the specified calendar year. This is followed by an industry poll where the film fraternity votes for its peers.
The nominations are then put up via Internet for the global audience to vote. The winners of the Special category are decided by the IIFA management and the IIFA advisory Board, comprising veterans like Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Yash Johar.
Speaking on the awards, Amitabh Bachchan said, "With an objective to celebrate Indian cinema across the globe, IIFA awards has evolved to become a global event. It represents the true spirit of Indian cinema." The IIFA award weekend will comprise IIFA World Premiere, IIFA foundation soccer challenge and IIFA forum apart from the Samsung IIFA awards. It will be Mani Ratnam's films at the IIFA World Premiere this year "Yuva" in Hindi and its Tamil version, "Aayudha Ezuthu." It will be held on May 20 at the Lido Cineplex at Shaw House. Mani Ratnam is expected to attend the show, along with his stars and technical crew .
