Mellifluous rendition

Carnatica - Light Classical - Isai Inbam - Nisha P. Rajagopal CAR CD 1042 - Vocal - Rs.150.

THE THUKKADAS or songs in the lighter genre of south Indian music form a delectable segment that is part and parcel of the post pallavi session in music concerts. Nisha Rajagopal truly gifted with a sweet, mellifluent voice, has rendered with a deep sense of involvement and instinctive musical and emotional perception, 14 songs of various composers in different languages.

The compositions of Kamalesa Vittala, Kulasekhara Azhwar, Papanasam Sivan, Maharaja Swati Tirunal, Tiruppanandal Pattabhiraamayya, Sant Namdev, Subramania Bharatiar, Purandaradasa, Appadurai, Meera Bai, Mariappa Swamigal, Oothukkadu Venkata Subbaier and Arunagirinathar comprise the agenda. The accompanists are R. Hemalatha on the violin, Melakaveri Balaji (mridangam) and N. Sundar (morsing and tabla). This light classical album of Nisha's is a colourful ray of crystalline melody.

Raasa Ganam - Carnatic Classical - Saptha Rathna - Songs of Double Album - vocal - Uthukkadu Venkatasubbaier - RSG- Needamangalam V. Alamelu and S. Jayasree, Rs. 90.

Uthukkadu Venkatasubbaier's compositions are precious gifts to the sphere of Carnatic Music and Bharatanatyam. The songs skilfully woven with swaras, jatis and sahitya have a gay abandon and a dancerly quality that keep the listener swaying with the rhythm and the music. Two audiocassettes with nine songs of the poet, sung by N. V. Alamelu and S. Jayasree, have been released by Raasa Ganam. Alamelu, a commendable exponent of Harikatha, has made a significant contribution to popularise Uthukkadu songs, continuing with dedication the praiseworthy efforts of her guru Needamangalam Krishnamurthy Bagavatar. The songs on Lord Ganesha and the Guruvandanam are crisp, lively renditions in Arabhi and Abhogi. The spirited singing of the Gowla, Paras, Keeravani, Todi, Kalyani and Madhyamavati songs is in keeping with their inherent lilt. These albums would help the student to learn the authentic patanthara of the Uthukkadu kritis.
