Litterateur celebrated
FROM JUNE 25 to 27, the Alliance Francaise organised a festival to celebrate well-known Tamil novelist-poet-translator-critic Sundara Ramaswamy. Readings from his works, talks by artistes and writers, enactment of his poems translator's viewpoint, a photo exhibition and a play comprised the three-day event. Kalachuvadu (which the writer founded in 1988 and published and edited till 1991) helped conduct the event, sponsored by RMKV silks.
"Pallakku Thookigal," directed by A. Ramaswamy and based on a short story by Sundara Ramaswamy, was presented by "Kalam a little art movement, Pondicherry" on June 27.
A protest against the establishment and authoritarianism, the play was telling enough. The adaptation had been done with the dramatic elements foremost as can be expected from a seasoned director like Ramaswamy who has worked with the Nija Nataka Iyakkam, Madurai, and the School of Performing Arts, Pondicherry University. But the play was cast in the stereotypical mould of avant-garde productions. What rasped on the ear was the pronunciation.
The photographs of Puduvai Ilavenil, who is also a documentary filmmaker, displayed in the foyer of the Alliance Francaise were arresting, capturing the writer in his many moods with a fine sense of lighting and feel.
