MANI KRISHNASWAMI, the popular Carnatic musician who attained mukti two years ago, has made a singular contribution to the genre of devotional hymns. The Dayasathakam authored by Swami Desikan, describes in its ten sets of ten slokas the "Anantha Kalyana Gunaas" of Sriman Narayana. The slokas depicting the Lord's mercy as being as sweet as sugarcane juice are unparalleled in bhakti and emotion. The Lord acknowledges the devotion of Desika by bestowing on him the title of Vedantacharya. Mani's singing of these sacred verses in many tuneful ragas with her dulcet voice, fresh and alive, has a spiritual quotient difficult to match.

The Soundarya Lahari was composed by the great preceptor Adi Sankara on Parasakti, the celestial consort of the Parabrahmam. The hymn comprises 100 verses divided into two sections.
The first 41 slokas are known as the Ananda Lahari (waves of joy and happiness) and the rest form the Soundarya Lahari describing the exquisite beauty of Devi from top to toe. Mani, as is her customary wont has sung the lyrics with total clarity of diction and fluency, in ragas such as Saveri, Sriranjani, Mohanam, Pantuvarali, Bilahari, Dhanyasi and others. Chanting or singing of these slokas would surely enhance the quality of one's life. — S.P.
