Handy guide for percussionists
THE BOOK "Korvais made easy" authored by M. N. Hariharan, a disciple of Guru Karaikudi Mani and Madurai T. Srinivasan, was released at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on July 27. Karaikudi Mani released the publication and Madurai Srinivasan, a very senior and reputed mridangam vidvan received the first copy. The book helps Carnatic musicians to compose korvais in various `nadais' to meet the requirements of the tala and arrive at the take off point of the lyrics. Korvais in 343 different combination of Nadais, Trikala korvais and the same for chapu talas, chandha talas can be composed with the help of this book.
The pancha nadai presentation in Adi Tala on the mridangam by T. Sampath was truly commendable. Equally praiseworthy were the pallavis extolling the pancha nadais, composed by nagaswaram vidwan T. A. P. Ravishanker and presented in masterly fashion by master M. Balamuralikrishna.
Innovative effort
Guru Karaikudi Mani's speech provided a deep insight into the intricacies of the art of percussion. He defined the uthama korvai as the mnemonic sequence taken from the samam to the song "Idam" the madhyama korvai beginning at the eduppu and the adhama korvai which is started from any point in the avartanam to reach the target.
His coinage of the term "Veha Vihitham" to denote the rate of movement between one akshara and another was innovate thinking. Madurai T. Srinivasan complimented Hariharan on his superb effort.
