Saturated with bhakti

Devotional songs - Thevaram and Thiruvasagam - Ponnoosal - Various artistes - Rs. 80.

THE DEVOTIONAL upsurge in the hearts of men takes different forms, and one among them is singing and composing songs saturated with Bhakti. The Thamizh Naalvar's contribution to the bhakti cult is beyond description.

The Thevarams by Gnanasambandar, Appar and Sundarar and the Thiruvasagam of Manickavasagar are packed to the hilt with compassion, love and spiritual messages inspiring men to concentrate on the ways and means of attaining salvation.

In this album, the music for the Thevaram and Thiruvasagam songs and the background score are to the credit of the inimitable film music director M. S. Viswanathan, who has used both the ancient `panns' and light melodies to great effect.

The lucid introduction and the explanatory comments by A. S. Gnanasambandam are exemplary.

Popular singers S. P. Balasubramaniam, Tiruppambaram Shanmukhasundaram, T. M. Soundararajan, Seergazhi G. Sivachidambaram, Malaysia Vasudevan, Rajkumar Bharati, Sunanda Kalpana and others including M. S. Viswanathan himself, have given involved musical expression to the unparalleled hymns.

Devotional - Bhakti Paravasam - Dr. R. Ganesh - Price not indicated.

Two audio volumes comprising devotional songs on various deities in the Hindu pantheon composed and set to music by Lakshmi Natarajan have been released.

The singer is Dr. R. Ganesh, a worthy disciple of Maharajapuram Santanam.

The albums containing as many as 29 songs which are couched pleasingly in tunes such as Desh, Mand, Behag, Peelu Kapi, Keeravani etc, and sung with emotional fervour would be welcome to rasikas to enjoy a tranquil, peaceful ambience. — SP
