Fluent articulation
Kalavardhanis - Carnatic Classical Vocal - Devi Kritis - Vaikom Vijayalakshmi - Rs. 50.
ALATHOOR VIJAYAKUMAR'S six kritis on Devi have been rendered by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, a visually challenged young singer endowed with a pleasant voice and commendable potential. "Navaratna Bhushita" in Navaratna vilasamu is articulated fluently despite the raga being quite unfamiliar. Vachaspati expanded with cogency, method and mellifluence has a balanced blend of all the necessary requisites karvais, pertinent moorchanas, madhyama and dhurita kala phrases.
Charumathi Raghuraman, belonging to the youthful brigade of violinists, plays a very acceptable alapana dotted with prayogas relevant to the raga swaroopa. "Swarnamukhi" in Khanda Chapu peppered with competent kalpana swaras, and "Umamaheswari" in Revathi are positive efforts. Jayashree, perhaps a brainchild of the composer, is a derivative of the Mela Keeravani that provides a tuneful apparel to the song "Mayamma".
Ranjani developed by the vocalist with intuitive perception of the raga bhava, and the violinist deftly showcasing the beauty of the melody, denote the serious training and natural ability of both. "Kanchadalayathakshi" on Kanchi Kamakshi is an emotional interpretation; however, the swara passages could have been better pruned eschewing raga forays and more focus on the raga lakshana.
"Kanchiki" in Valaji set to Tisra nadai Adi tala, with a plethora of charanams concludes the programme in a brisk fashion. The artiste deserves encouragement. S.P.
