Violin in all its grandeur

A MUSICAL vision looking beyond the scales in raga alapana, an exposition in all its lyrical beauty and grandeur, an aesthetic tradition that stirs and inspires, an easy grace that lights up whatever item he plays, blending sampradaya with creativity form the bedrock of T.N. Krishnan's violin solo concerts.

All these characteristics came into full play in the performance at the Sri Thyagaraja Vidwat Samajam's 75th year celebration when many veteran vidwans had gathered that provided a real vidwat sadas to T.N. Krishnan. The item "Tolinenu-Jesina" (Kokiladwani) was his first joyous presentation. There were strands of charming phrasings in the simple but delightful Kamas followed by "Sujana-Jeevana".

This piece was precious to the rasikas for the way he showered compassion on the interpretation. The sheer strength of his melodic mastery was stunning. The Todi alapana brought out Krishnan's close involvement in artistry. The mounting sangatis in the kirtana "Koluvamaregada", the neraval and swaras looked like a well-composed symphony. Krishnan's version of Suruti revealed musing sensitivity and fresh insights into the raga's rakti aspects. He breathed visranti into Kapi raga alapana and the kriti "Inta-sowkhya." He wove a fine musical web of pleasing fluency throughout the concert. Guruvayoor Dorai (mridangam) and Vaikom Gopalakrishnan (ghatam) provided a robust tani avartanam. — SVK
