Tight grip on tala
SUSHILA KRISHNAMURTHI'S music is contemplative and innovative. In her concert at Hamsadhwani, she showed no undue sense of hurry either in rendering alapanas or kritis which were resourcefully chosen.
She had a tight grip on tala and V. Kalyanaraman giving full support on the mridangam the concert satisfied old-timers.
Beginning with her own composition, "Bhajami Satatam" in Chandrajyoti, Sushila sang "Brovabarama" pleasingly and Dikshitar's "Gunijanathi" (Gurjari) was handled with absolute ease.
Swati Tirunal's "Jaya Jaya Padmanabha" (Sarasangi) followed a praiseworthy alapana. The neraval was quite inspiring and scholarly. "Varuvai Varuvai Kanna" scripted by Bharathiyar was rendered as a ragamalika.
The setting was perfect for the Huseni RTP.
Tanam was quite soft and on a few occasions appeared extended alapana. But they were charming. The tala adi - khanda spoke of the artiste's laya control. Here again, the mridangist's co-operation was complete. Radha Sundaresan (violinist) did her bit without ostentation. Syama Sastri's "Brihannayaki" (Madhyamavathi) gave glint to the final phase of the concert and the artiste was praised wholeheartedly for the devotional fervour she roused.
