Nuances captured
R. Janani
OVER THE years, Dr R. Janani has cultivated a robust voice and an expressive style, which enables her to bring out the nuances of Carnatic music effectively. An emphatic Bhairavi varnam in Ata tala marked the beginning of a satisfying recital for the Naganallur Sri Thyagaraja Sangeetha Samajam. ``Ganamoorthe (Tyagaraja- Ganamoorthy) amply reflected the emotive ingredients of the composition. Puliyur Doraiswamy Iyer's ``Saraseeruhasanapriye" (Nattai) was full of bhava and was decked with crisp kalpanaswaras. Panthuvarali alapana and Thyagaraja's ``Ninnunera Namminanura" were delightful with brisk swarapraasthara for the famous phrase ``Veda Sasthra Purana."
The devotional element was fully present during the rendition of Dikshithar's ``Akhilandeswari" (Dwijawanthi). Jyothiswaroopini is a fairly well known raga, but not its suddha madhyama counterpart, which is Ragavardhani. Lalgudi Jayaraman's beautiful composition in Ragavardhani, ``Thavarizhaippathu en Iyalbanro" was rendered delectably. The Sankarabharanam alapana featured grand phrases characterising this great raga and Muthaiah Bhagavathar's ``Manadukkisainda manalan" heard infrequently in concerts was sung in superb fashion with neraval and kalpanaswaras for ``Samarasa Sargunan."
A. G. A. Gnanasundaram provided able accompaniment on the violin, making good contributions in Nattai, Panthuvarali and Sankarabharanam. Thanjavur Kumar gave excellent mridangam support. His tani avarthanam assisted by Pudukottai Ramachandran on Ghatam and Nanganallur Sriram on the morsing featured delightful laya patterns, culminating in an interesting unique muthaippu .
To crown the concert the artiste did a ragam, tanam, pallavi in Dharmavathi, the pallavi lyric being ``Gokula Baalan Padame Panivom," sung in Khanda jaathi triputa tala 2 kallai at ½ idam with swaraprasthara in ragamalika, culminating in a swara korvai in the main raga, Dharmavathi.
