Rare kritis

FROM THE opening Swathi Thirunal song ``Mamavasada janani" in Kanada to the Thyagaraja's ``Vinarada na manavi," V. Bhavana, set off audiences in a reminiscent mood. All the same, this highly promising young vocalist left her individual imprint on the mind at the Ragasudha hall on Friday last. A disciple of V. Subramanian, pupil of the late Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, she chose kritis that even the legend's fans would have found rare. For how often does one hear the Andavan Pichai song ``Pahi pahi saradhe krupanidhe" in Kalyani, or the Kumara Ettendra kriti ``Gajavadana sammoditha charana" in Todi?

Bhavana presented the Bhadrachala Ramdas song Rama ``Jogi mandu konare pamarulara" (savour the precious tonic of Rama manthram) towards the close of the performance. The song which has assumed prominence in recent decades, has an interesting Semmangudi connection. Composer Thanjavur Sankara Iyer and G. Dwarakanath stumbled upon the notations set to Khamas in Subbarama Dikshithar's book, Balabodhini (P.98-99.) Observing the similarity to the tune popular among the farming community in Chittoor, they took it to Srinivasa Iyer who polished, perfected and presented it before audiences in the mid-1960s. Elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh, the song is rendered in Salagabhairavi and available through Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna's recordings.
